NASHUA -- James Mahoney, 74, Nashua, died Monday, July 30, 2001 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton of an apparent heart attack.

Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia with Rev. John Hemann officiating. Jane Karels was organist, and accompanied the St. Boniface and St. Michael Church choirs singing "Be Not Afraid", "We Remember", "One Bread,- One Body", "Peace is Flowing Like a River" arid "Hosea". Lectors were Sr. Carla Popes and Rita Swinton. Mass servers were Lisa Tjlkes, Jessica Mahoney and Lydia Mitchell.  Presenting the offertory gifts were Nicholas Mahoney, Peter Mahoney, Megan Mahoney, Collen Mahoney and Cory Huegel. James' wife ana children .placed the pall. Eucharistic ministers were Virgene Huegel, Theresa Buss ana Susan Kriener.

Burial was in the church cemetery with grandchildren serving as casket bearers.

Visitation was from 4-8 .m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, with a p.m. Rosary and 7 p.m. Scripture Service and also an hour prior to services. Conway Funeral Home, New Hampton, was in charge of arrangements.

James Bernard Mahoney was born Jan. 23, 1927 at Waverly, the son of Emmett and

Gertrude (Lentz) Mahoney. He attended country school in various areas and also attended Nashua High School. After his schooling, Jim farmed with his father. On Feb. 8, 1949, he was united in marriage with Mary ' Popes at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Nashua. After their marriage the couple farmed four and one-half miles south of Ionia. While farming, James also worked as a carpenter. In 1992, he retired and they moved to Nashua. He enjoyed gardening, collecting rocks, woodworking, especially the canoe he made. He also raised homing pigeons and ducks as well as helping his children at their homes and farms.

Surviving are his wife, Mary, Nashua; six sons, Steve (Sue), Ionia, Pat (Judy), Kersey, CO, Mike (Brenda) and Matt (Marie), Nashua, Phil (Mary), New Hampton, Tim (Rose), Martinsville:, IN; five daughters, Sue (Bob) Kriener, Brooklyn, Theresa (Brad) Buss, Waverly, Virgene "Jean" (Neal) Huegel ana Kathy (Randy) Mitchell, New Hampton, Laureen Tilkes, Plainview, MN; 30 grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents and two grandchildren, Christopher Kriener and Jennifer Mahoney.
