NEW HAMPTON - Elizabeth M. Kuennen, 89, New Hampton, died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2001 at the home of her son, Denis in Marshfield, WI after a brief illness.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Hampton with Rev. Carl Schmitt as celebrant. Ann Bennett was organist, accompanying the St. Mary's Choir. Lectors were Esther Darnell, Adrian Kuennen and Vernon Kuennen. The offertory gifts were presented by Monica Burrows, Elizabeth Calhoun and Sylvia Kuennen. The pall was placed on the casket by her nine children.

Interment , was in St. Mary's Cemetery with grandchildren, Richard Darnell, Joel Kuennen, Tom Kuennen, Eric Kuennen, Jason Burrows, Todd Kuennen, Angela Calhoun and Jessica Bailey as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Denise Hurwitz, Donna Jones, Gregory Darnell, Douglas Darnell, Ann Combs, Sue Swinehart, Mike Kuennen, Jill Kuennen, David Kuennen, Christine Kuennen, Elise Burrows, Christopher Kuennen, Emily Burrows, Heather Kuennen, Joshua Kuennen, Nicholas Kuennen, Amy Hand and Matthew Bailey.

Visitation was 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24 at Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton, with a 4 p.m. Rosary, a 7 p.m. Parish Scripture Service and a 7:30 p.m. Video Memorial Tribute.

Elizabeth was born Dec. 7, 1911 in rural Fayette County near St. Lucas, the daughter of Nicholas and Catherine (Hackman) Kuehner. She attended St. Luke's School in St. Lucas. On Feb. 6,1934 she married Leo Frank Kuennen at St. Luke's Catholic Church, Together the couple farmed near St. Lucas for seven years and then moved southwest of New Hampton where they farmed until retiring in 1973 at which time they moved into New Hampton. Elizabeth had been a volunteer at the NewHampton Care Center for over 20 years, was a member of St. Mary's Catholic_ Church, Farm Bureau and the New Hampton Farmers Coop. She was active at her church where she often led the rosary before mass. She enjoyed cooking and corresponding with family and friends.

Survivors include five sons, Denis (Bernice) Kuennen, Marshfield, WI, Adrian (Ellen) Kuennen, Iowa City, Vernon (Eileen) Kuennen, Coon Rapids, MN, Cyril (Judy) Kuennen, Phoenix, AZ and Mark (Frances) Kuennen, New Hampton; four daughters, Esther Darnell, Clinton, MD, Sylvia Kuennen (John Cor-doue), Sioux City, Monica (Bill) Burrows, Sioux City and Elizabeth (John) Calhoun, Sioux City; 26 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna (Ray) Kuennen, Lawler and Sr. Rose Catherine Kuehner F.S.P.A., LaCrosse, WI; three sisters-in-law, Teresa Kuehner, Lawler, Minnie Kuehner and Rita Kuehner, St. Lucas.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Leio, in 1987; one daughter, Barbara Bailey; a son-in-law, Donald Darnelh two grandchildren, Raphael Kuennen and Nicholas Kuennen; three brothers, Will, Carl and Leonard Kuehner and four sisters, Sr. Nicolette Kuehner F.S.P.A., Theresa Winter, Sr. Cyrene Kuehner F.S.P.A. and Josephine Kuehner in infancy.

Memorials may be given to the Leo and Elizabeth Kuennen Scholarship Fund at New Hampton High School.
