DES MOINES - Ruth L. Gruenberg, 80, Des Moines and formerly of Fredericksburg, died of a respiratory ailment on Sunday, May 6, 2001 at the U.S.A. Health Care Center in Urbandale.

Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at the Caldwell-Raddatz Funeral Home in Des Moines, with Pastor Charles Johnson officiating. Hymn selections will include "Wind Beneath My Wings", "Amazing Grace" ana "How Great Thou Art".

Her body has been donated to the University Hospital in Iowa City. Ruth Leona Degner was born Jan. 14,    1921 near Fredericksburg, the daughter of William F. and Pauline (Paulsen) Degner. She attended school in Fredericksburg. Ruth was employed at cafes and the Variety Store in Fredericksburg and during World War II, she worked at tne Ordnance Plant in Ankeny. In 1951, Ruth moved to Des Moines and began working at the Meredith Corporation as a book binder and book sender, retiring from there in 1986. She had also worked part-time in the banquet department of Hotel Savery for a number of years. Ruth was active in the 25-year Club of Meredith and was a member of the Meredith Retirees Group. She enjoyed traveling, her yard, garden and flowers.

Survivors include one brother, Harold (Delores) Degner, Des Moines; three sisters, Luella (Paul) Gitch, Gertrude Mikes, Fredericksburg, Lurline (Paul) O’Day, Jacksonville, FL; four nieces and nephews; 12 great-nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents and one sister, Evelyn Hunt.
