Virgil Smith, 63, Fayette County Sheriff, died suddenly early Monday morning, Nov. 27, 2000.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waukon.

Visitation was Tuesday, Nov. 28 at the Martin Funeral Home in Waukon.

Smith had been serving as Sheriff of Fayette County since January 1997. His law enforcement career included four years as the West Union Chief of Police and 30 years with the Iowa State Patrol.
