Janette M. Kos, 76CHARLES CITY - Janette M. (Mrs. Kenneth) Kos, 76, died unexpectedly Thursday, March 23 at the Biloxi Regional Medical Center, Biloxi, MS after suffering an apparent massive stroke while on a golfing trip. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 27 at Immaculate Conception Church, U.S. Highway 18 and Clark Streets, Charles City. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Charles City. Visitation was from 3 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, March 26 at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, Charles City. St. Jude's Circle recited the Rosary at 4 p.m. and there was a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m. Visitation was also one hour prior to the Funeral Mass at the church on Monday. Mrs. Kos, the former Janette Mary Scallon, was born Feb. 7, 1924 in Ackley, the daughter of William S. and Laura V. (Steffen) Scallon. She attended Sacred Heart Academy and gaduated from Ackley High School. She then graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque. On April 24, 1951 she married Kenneth James Kos at St. Mary's Church in Ackley. The couple made their home in Charles City where Janette first began a career as a registered nurse at the former Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. She then became a surgical nurse for Dr. Ayers and Dr. Kelly of Charles City. For 26 years she assisted the surgeons at hospitals in Charles City, New Hampton, Cresco and other places. She retired from full-time duty in 1991. She then served Floyd County Memorial Hospital as a surgical nurse on a part-time basis. Janette was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and St. Jude's Circle of the church, She was also a member of the FCNB Heritage Club. Golfing was a deep love and passion for Janette. She was very active in the Wildwood Ladies Golf Association, taking care of many of the tasks of the club. She loved to garden, raising both flowers and vegetables. Her zest and zeal for life was lived out in the countless hours she spent in her volunteer work and the time she took to help others. Survivors include three children, Patricia (Charles) Peyton, New Hampton, Steven (Shereen) Kos, Waterloo and David Kos, Ionia; a sister, Kathleen (Richard) Balch, Annapolis, MN; two brothers, Leo Scallon, Oceanside, CA and Nicholas "Nick" (Alene) Scallon, Rancho Santa Fe, CA; four grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband, Kenneth, who died March 17, 1981 in Charles City; her parents; and four brothers. Memorials may be directed to the family who have established a memorial in Janette's name to the Wildwood Ladies Golf Association.
