Grace M. McKay Hill, 81WAUCOMA - Grace M. McKay Hill, 81, San Angelo, TX, died Tuesday, Sept. 12,2000 at a San Angelo hospital after a long illness. A memorial service was held at the Grand Court, San Angelo, on Sept. 16 with Rev. John Reynolds officiating. A second memorial service was held at the San Louis Rey Mission in Oceanside, CA on Sept. 22 with Father Dick McCue, USN (Ret.) officiating. Cremation and arrangements were handled by Johnson's Funeral Home, San Angelo. Grace was born Feb. 27, 1919 in Waucoma, the daughter of Patrick and Constance McKay. She graduated from the Ursuline Sisters High School in Cleveland, OH ana earned her nursing degree from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Dubuque in 1940. She worked for a snort time for a dentist in Dubuque and in July, 1941, Grace joined the U S. Navy and was stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, IL. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor she was ordered to the U.S. Naval Hospital, Pearl Harbor, HI where she served for two years. She also served at naval hospitals and clinics in Puget Sound and Astoria, OR, Tillamook, OR, the Philippine Islands and Tsingtao, China. While stationed in Tsingtao in 1948, Grace met and married U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Twyman R. (Ty) Hill. She resigned from the Navy on Oct.31, 1948. Upon her husband’s retirement from the Marine Corps in 1975, the couple moved to Escondido, CA where they lived until October 1998, when they moved to San Angelo, TX. Surviving are her husband, Ty; two daughters, Nancy (Ron) Knight, San Angelo, TX, Shelley (Paul Hughes) Hill, Steamboat Springs, CO; four grandchildren; a brother-in-law,Elroy Hentges, Alta Vista; a sister-in-law, Lucille McKay, Waucoma. Preceding her in death were her parents; two brothers, Jack and Bill; a sister, Betty. Memorials may be given to a favorite charity.
