F. E. Deggendorf, Agent of the First and Life Insurance Co., real estate and loans, 855 Main Street, Dubuque, is a native of Austria, and was born December 12,1834; came to America in 1850, and came to Dubuque in December of the same year.  Upon the breaking out of the rebellion he enlisted in the first call for troops in 1861, in Co. H, 1st I. V. T.; he was severely wounded in the battle of Wilson’s Creek, and remained in a rebel hospital four months; the severe nature of his wounds prevented his going into active service again.  In 1863 he engaged in the insurance, real estate and loan business, and has conducted it for the past seventeen years.  In 1864, Mr. Deggendorf was united in marriage to Miss Anna Seegan, a native of Austria; they have four children—Ferdinand, Jennie, A. Stanton and Norma.

Capt. Stephen I Dolson, one of the most prominent and pioneer steamboat men of the Upper Mississippi died recently at the residence of his brother in Dubuque.

 Mid-1880’s Master of the “JAMES FISKE JR.” in the rafting trade.

Captain Dolson Run Yukon Steamers During Klondike Rush

Dubuque, IA., funeral services for Captain Thomas Dolson, pioneer river man were held here yesterday afternoon.  Captain Dolson, who was 70 years old, died in a Burlington hospital Saturday while he was preparing to act as pilot on a river steamer this summer. He piloted packets on the upper and lower Mississippi for 50 years and he was at the wheel of the Yukon river steamers during the Klondike rush in the late 90”s.

WILLIAM J. DOLSON

Capt. W. J. Dolson, Capt of the Emma, residence 271 Alta Vista, Dubuque, native of Morrow Co, Il and born Sept 10, 1820, his parents moved to Missouri in same year; he grew up there until 16 when he came to Dubuque in 1847 and removed here permanently with family, April 1848, engaged in mining 4 years, and went on the river, he has been engaged in steamboating since 1854 - over a quarter of a century—is one of the oldest pilots on the river.  He was married to Miss Sarah Levens of Morrow County, Illinois, June 22, 1843—3 children Stephen I pilot on the river, Leander G. engineer on river and Thomas H. pilot on the river.
