On
September 9, 1862, the 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry was mustered
into service. Two and one-half years later it had
“travailed all over creation and part of Texas,"
said Private James Bethard. A week later Robert E. Lee
surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia and survivors of the
21st Iowa completed their final campaign of the war. |
