There are no post offices nor villages in this township, but it, nevertheless, is superior to some of its sister townships in population, wealth and other advantages. Its population is1031, two hundred and fourteen of whom are voters.

It is well supplied with churches and commom schools, water and timber. The nearest P.O. is at Mt. Pleasant, where most of the people get their mail.

The town of New London in New London Township, Henry County, Iowa, was laid out by Abraham Dover, in the year 1835. In the year 1837 or '38, the original plat was purchased from said Dover by Jonathan Ring and one Steel, who proceeded to remodel the plat by the proper location of streets and a public square. The town is situate upon the southern border of a beautiful prairie, which extends far away to the North and West, and thickly interspersed upon the face of which are happy families who have just begun to realize the superior advantages of their present location over the one they have but recently left in some of the older states. The town contains about eight hundred and fifty inhabitants, among whom are eight merchants, four lawyers, six doctors, six preachers, four blacksmiths, eight house carpenters, one tin shop, four wagon makers, one carriage maker, one saddle and harness maker, two drug stores, no doggery, or place where strychnine and vitriol are sold as a beverage. Among the institutions of the town are one Methodist Church, one Baptist Church, one United Presbyterian Church, one Christian Church, one Cumberland Presbyterian Church, one faction known as soul-sleepers, who maintain that man has no soul but the body, four schools, one Lodge of Odd Fellows, one of Masons, and one of Good Templars. Among the public buildings are four meeting houses, one large steam flouring mill, one three story brick school house, two taverns, one Railroad Depot, besides other public buildings. The town is easily supplied with a good quality of water by digging a few feet below the surface, and an abundant supply of wood and timber is adjacent on the south, and nothing is wanting but good times and sufficient enterprise to make it the abode of a happy and prosperous people.

Salem Township is situated in the S.W. corner of Henry Co., and is commensurate with Congressional township No. 70, R. 7. The township is of about equal portions of prairie and timber lands. The prairies are mostly high and undulating, with a rich allurial soil, admirably adapted to horticultural and agricultural purposes, and mostly in a good state of cultivation. The surface of the timbered portion is uneaven and hilly, and, as a general thing, illy adapted to farming purposes. The timber is principally white and burr oak, blackwalnut, hickory, linn, birch and sugar maple, furnishing an abundant supply for all practical purposes.

Limestone and stonecoal of a superior quality exists in great abundance throughout the township, especially in the timbered portion. Cannel coal has been discovered in several places in the N.W. part of the township, but not in sufficient quantities to justify the laborer. What future enterprise will develop remains to be disclosed.

Gold in small quantities has been discovered in the N.W. part of the township, but not in sufficient quantities to justify working the mines. The metal is of the finest quality.

This township is noted for its healthy locality and the mildness and beauty of its prairie and woodland scenery. The principal streams are the Big and Little Cedar creeks, which afford many valuable water privileges, some of which are improved.

The population comprises a great many of the pioneers and first settlers of the country, who now enjoy the fruits of their early labors; good and comfortable houses; this speaks well for this portion of the country. Quite a large portion of the population in the township are of the Society of Friends, whose quiet manners and steady habits never fail to shed a benign influence upon the customs, morals, and intelligence of the community in which they reside. To them may be attributed many of the virtues of society, which, from custom, have become fixed as the law of the land. The people are noted for their plainness and simplicity of manners, industry, sobriety, and general intelligence.

Salem, an incorporated village of six hundred and sixty-six inhabitants, situated near the eastern side of the township, is its principal village. It is quite a thriving and prosperous town, and a place of considerable retail trade. It contains seven dry goods and grocery stores, two stove and tin stores, one drug store, two hotels, two saddle and harness shops, two shoe shops, five blacksmith shops, one wool carding machine, three carriage and wagon shops, one furniture establishment, together with other trading shops peculiar to villages of the West, except a liquor shop; for this peculiar traffic, the elements are not congenial. Several attempts have been made to locate, but have invariably languished and died.

The township high school is located at this point, and well sustained; and the town supports besides, four primary schools. The balance of the township has seven primary schools. A commendable zeal and interest is manifested in the cause of education, and increasingly so under the operation of the new school laws of the State.

Salem contains four Churches: Methodist Episcopal, Congregational, Friends, and Wesleyan Methodist. The three former are spacious and substantial brick edifices. The Friends hold their Quarterly Meeting here.

Hillsboro', formerly Washington, is situated in the south-western part of the Township, on a point of high, rolling prairie, adjacent to groves of timber. It is a small village unincorporated, and contains one hundred and nineteen inhabitants. It contains two dry goods stores, two hotels, two smith shops, one wagon shop, and one potter shop. Potter's clay of an excellent quality is found one and a half miles north of the village, from which various excellent wares are manufactured.

Hillsboro' contains one church, a handsome and spacious edifice, used by the Episcopal Methodists and Congregationalists.
