Benjamin and Mary Miller Golden Wedding - 1925

Miller, Eicher, Raber, Schlegel

50th Wedding Anniversary - Wayland News - 2/19/1925

Mr. and Mrs. B. R. Miller Celebrate for the Fiftieth Time

The Anniversary of Their Wedding Day

Fifty years ago, on February 15, 1875, occurred the marriage of Ben R. Miller and Mary Eicher, in a log cabin, the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Christ Eicher near Wayland, Iowa. The officiating minister was Rev. Jos. Slagel (Joseph Schlegel) pastor of the Mennonite church. This young couple went to housekeeping on a farm near Trenton where they resided for but one year, the rest of their wedded life, being spent in or near Wayland, excepting for seven years during which time they resided on a farm near Akron, Colorado.

Mr. and Mrs. Miller were blessed with twelve children, six boys and six girls. These children were all permitted to grow into manhood and womanhood, however one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Gray, was called by death at the age of 29 years.

On Sunday, February 15, 1925, Mr. and Mrs. Miller celebrated the Golden Wedding Anniversary of their wedding at their country home four miles northeast of Wayland. The house was tastefully decorated in the colors of gold and white. The dining table was adorned with golden tulips while a large bouquet of carnations perfumed the living room. The bride and groom of fifty years used goblets at this wedding dinner that were gifts to them two score and ten years ago.

The dinner was prepared and served by the children, the menu being: meat loaf, brown sauce, whipped potatoes, escalloped oysters, peas en patties, Waldorf salad, pickles, rye bread, dinner rolls, coffee, gold and white ice cream, gold and white angel cake, and mints.

Covers were placed for twelve at the table where Mr. and Mrs. Miller acted as host and hostess to a few of their brothers and sisters and also the minister, Rev. Schrag. The remaining guests were served on trays. Immediately after dinner was over, Jake Miller, a son, presented the father and mother with a gold clock, a token of love that will last through time, a gift from their children. Other gifts presented at this time were one five dollar gold piece, two two and one/half dollar gold pieces, two silver dollars, and several other gifts.

Rev. Schrag was called upon to speak and responded in a delightful manner. He read the first Psalm and quoted several passages from the 90th Psalm. His words were especially for Mr. and Mrs. Miller, of how wonderful it must be to have lived fifty years of happy and contented lives together with a nice family to cheer their home. Prayer was offered after which the guests congratulated Mr. Miller and his bride of 50 years and departed for their homes.

During the day, photos were taken of the elderly couple which the relatives hope to keep as a remembrance of this anniversary, which comes but once in a lifetime to but a few people.

Sunday was also the 20th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Benedict Eicher, who were present at this occasion, Mr. Eicher being a brother of Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Eicher was likewise celebrating her birthday at the same time.

Those present at this Golden Wedding were seven children and families from near Olds, one son, John and family from Washington, another son, Dan, from Belview, Minnesota, Verna at home, a grandson, Harold Gray, wife and daughter, Carol of Ainsworth (Carol Gray being the only great grandchild present), Rev. Schrag and several brothers and sisters of in or near Wayland and Olds. One son, Dave, of near Richland was unable to be present on account of the serious illness of his daughter. Two grandchildren and one great-grandchild of Davenport were also unable to attend.

Mt. Pleasant News, Wed. Nov. 13, 1884:

On last Thursday evening a pleasant company assembled at the hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. A. Reed, to witness the marriage of their daughter Elizabeth to Mr. C. R. Miller, the very popular merchant of Olds city. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Mr. Torn, of Winfield, after which all partook of a bountiful supper. Just one of those good old fashioned suppers Mrs. Reed knows so well how to prepare and then there was such a fine display of presents, both useful and ornamental, as would naturally make the happy couple wish they had married long ago, and then, just to give spice to the occasion, the Swedesburg Brass Band chanced to pass that way and discoursed some of their sweetest music.

Musser - Anderson - 1909

Musser, Anderson

12-19-1909 - Wayland News

On Wednesday evening at six o'clock occurred the wedding of Miss Margaret Musser and Mr. J. A. Anderson at the home of the bride in Olds. Both bride and groom are well acquainted here having lived in Olds or near there all their lives. The wedding was a quiet affair, only a few of the family being present to witness the ceremony. Rev. S. M. Musselman performed the ceremony that made them husband and wife after which a very nice three course dinner was served. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson left immediately over the "Q" for Chicago where they will spend their honeymoon. Their many friends found them out as they usually will and a large crowd of them gathered at Wayne when they came to take the train, to see them off. They sent them forth under the customary shower of rice and old boots and shoes. Oh, we are not sure about the boots and shoes, whether there were any at all for that matter, but the rice was much in evidence and we are pretty certain that there were boots and shoes in the crowd and maybe some old and some new; but what use they made of them we cannot tell, and we know this, that all their friends seemed to have a good time and we know the bride and groom had. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson will make their home in Olds where the groom conducts a prosperous hardware business. May their lives be happy.

Wenger - Boller - 1909

Wenger, Boller

12-29-1909 - Wayland News

If one were to describe the wedding of Mis Estella, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Wenger and Dr. O. F. Boller of Morning Sun , which took place at the home of the bride in West Wayland at four o'clock on Wednesday December 22, it would simply have to be said that it was one of those delightful home weddings. The fine home of the bride was beautifully decorated with roses and carnations, just enough to present a delightful homelike welcome to the guests as they came in. There was no attempt at the elaborate, but no pains were spared to make it one of those simple and dignified affairs that are always most attractive. Promptly at 4 o'clock the bride and groom took their place in the parlor while a wedding march from Lohengrin was being played by Miss Mabel Wenger. The ceremony used by Rev. S. M. Musselman in pronouncing them man and wife was unique in that the whole marriage service had been cast into poetic form, which made the whole a beautiful service of poetry and music. The bride looked her best, shall we say sweetest, dressed in a lovely Benga line silk, while the groom made a splendid appearance in conventional black. Immediately after the ceremony, a three course dinner was served. It was simply wonderful how many good things can be put in a three course dinner by those who know how, and those who planned this wedding dinner seem to know how, as any one of the fortunate guests present will testify. There were about forty guests present including the immediate families of the bride and groom and cousins and friends. The time after the dinner was very pleasantly spent in suitable games by the young people and vocal and instrumental music. Dr. and Mrs. Boller will make their home in Morning Sun, where the doctor enjoys a liberal patronage as dentist. We can only join in wishing this young couple a happy married lief with enough brightness and sunshine to make the few cloudy days bearable. The bride and groom represent two of our best families here.
