Rosendale - This small community was located in Sec. 25-86-25 in Clear
Lake Township and appears on a map dated 1896. At another time it was
moved south to Sec. 35.
Then a 1910 atlas shows it to be in Sec. 26, across from the Rosendale
School in Sec. 25. It is probable that the post office was moved to a
different home as the postmaster was changed.
The Rosendale Post Office was opened on Nov. 20, 1888, and John H.
Skaaluve was the first postmaster. The post office was finally moved
into Boone County, across the line from Section 35, on May 28, 1896.
Then service was discontinued completely on Mar. 31, 1902.
Skaaluve was the first settler in the small village of Rosendale. At one
time there was quite a lot of business activity, which included two
implement stores, a dry goods store, a hardware store, a grocery store,
the Rosendale Creamery, a blacksmith, a general store, and the Baldus
Implement Shop.
Another store, the Tom Mikkelson Store, sold groceries and dry goods.
All of these businesses were in operation in 1900. A. O. Peterson had
several of the businesses. One was the Peterson Produce House, where he
bought and sold eggs, ducks, and chickens. He sold out his holdings in
1919. In its declining years, only one store remained. It was the
original Taig's store, with a gas pump out front. It closed in 1966.
