Poplar Grove - This small settlement was located in Sec 23-88-26 in
Freedom Township. It was named for a small grove of poplar trees. It was
a busy place, located around a creamery, a school, a store, and a post
office. The local farmers would bring in their produce for sale at the
store, their cream to the creamery, and they always stopped at the
"inland post office" for their mail and the latest gossip.
The post office was opened on Mar. 25, 1890, with Morris Smith appointed
as first postmaster. An inland post office was one whose mail was
carried to it from a larger post office, in this case from Webster City.
The settlement appears on maps from about 1896 to 1900. The post office
was discontinued on Mar. 22, 1900, and soon after, it disappeared from
the maps.
