This hand-tinted tintype is of a
Union cavalryman with either the last name of Vermillion or Bryant.
Family story is that he was a teamster in an Iowa cavalry regiment from
Greene County, Iowa. There were several soldiers with the last name of
Vermillion in the 3rd and also the 4th Iowa Cavalry Regiments. The
soldier appears in the standard mounted services jacket and mounted
services trousers. He also wears a saber belt and holds the model 1833
US Dragoon saber.
