Daniel Walker

Daniel Walker, who is successfully engaged in general agricultural pursuits on section 23, Franklin township, is a native of Ontario, Canada, where he was born on the 29th of December, 1856, his parents being Walter and Bridget (Scullon) Walker. The father’s birth occurred in Scotland, but in the year 1830 he took up his abode on this side the Atlantic and carried on farming in Canada until the time of his demise. The mother, who was of Irish descent, passed away in 1899.

Daniel Walker was but two years of age at the time of his father’s death and acquired his education in the common schools of Canada, remaining at home with his mother until he had attained the age of twenty-two years. He then crossed the border into the United States, and after spending several years in the east, took up his residence in Greene county, Iowa, in 1877. Here he has since remained and is now the owner of two hundred and forty acres of excellent farming land on section 23, Franklin township, in the cultivation of which he is meeting with a goodly measure of prosperity, his fields annually yielding golden harvests as a reward for the care and labor he bestows upon them.

In 1881 Mr. Walker was united in marriage to Theresa Garland, and they have become the parents of nine children, namely: Anna and Bridget, both of whom have passed away; William, at home ; Daniel, Agnes and Theresa, who are also deceased; and Mary, Walter and Lauretta, who are yet under the parental roof.

In his political views Mr. Walker is a stalwart champion of the democracy, and both he and his wife are members of the Catholic church. For thirty years he has been numbered among the prosperous and enterprising agriculturists of the county and the well kept appearance of his farm is the visible evidence of his energy, thrift and capable business management. In the community where they have so long resided both Mr. and Mrs. Walker have gained many warm friends, who greatly enjoy the hospitality and good cheer of their pleasant home.
