William G. Stephenson

William G. Stephenson, a retired agriculturist residing in Churdan, was born in Jackson county, Ohio, June 29, 1832, a son of James and Mary (Groves) Stephenson. After the death of his father, his mother married Stephen Marmon. In the year 1856 they came to Greene county, Iowa, purchasing eighty acres of raw prairie in Cedar township.

William G. Stephenson worked as a farm hand by the month and also trapped, being thus engaged until the outbreak of the Civil war. On the 15th of August, 1862, he enlisted as a member of Company E, Thirty-ninth Iowa Infantry, and capably served his country until the spring of 1865. He was on guard duty most of the time, and when hostilities had ceased returned to Iowa with a creditable military record, having never faltered in the performance of any duty that was assigned to him. On his return here, he purchased at different times four hundred and forty acres of land on sections 28, 29 and 32, Cedar township, and began the active operation of the farm. He made all of the improvements, set out trees, tiled the land and carried on his agricultural pursuits with enterprise and diligence until about ten years ago, when he retired from active work, his well directed energy and business management having brought to him the competence that now enables him to live without recourse to further labor. He now resides in Churdan and is widely known as one of its venerable and respected residents.

Mr. Stephenson is a republican in his political views and has never swerved from his allegiance to the party since casting his first presidential ballot for Fremont. He served as constable for ten years, and in his religious affiliation is an active worker in the Methodist church, as is also his wife.

In Greene county, Iowa, in 1865, Mr. Stephenson was joined in wedlock to Miss Elizabeth Cochran, who was born in Ohio, October 17, 1846, and came to this county in 1863 with her parents, Joseph and Margaret (Camelin) Cochran. They drove across the country from Ohio and took up their abode in Kendrick township. Unto our subject and his wife were born four children, as follows: James H.; Mrs. Margaret Toyne; Mrs. Mary Loch of Churdan; and Altha, who died at twenty years of age.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Stephenson are well known and respected residents of the community and command the warm regard and friendship of all with whom they come in contact. Mr. Stephenson was for many years a prominent and representative agriculturist of Cedar township and Greene county and the competence that now enables him to live retired has come to him as the reward of his activity and enterprise in the conduct of his business in terests.
