Miss Mary A. Jones well deserves mention in the
history of Greene county, where she has extensive property interests
and is known as a leading business woman of excellent executive ability
and keen business discernment. She is a native of New Hampshire,
although reared in the middle west. Her parents were Samuel and Mariam
(Fellows) Jones, who were also natives of New England, whence they
removed to Princeton, Bureau county, Illinois, when their daughter Mary
was but a year old. The father owned a tract of land between Peru and
LaSalle streets in Princeton, which became very valuable and is now one
of the best residence districts of the city, General Henderson’s home
being located upon a part of the original tract in possession of Mr.
Jones.
In the family of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Jones were six children, two sons
and four daughters: Mary A.; Sarah E., deceased; Henrietta, wife of
Milton Sayres, of Jefferson; Josiah and Joseph, both deceased; and
Annie, who died in Illinois. The death of the husband and father
occurred in Princeton, Illinois, where he was regarded as a leading
business man and representative citizen. After his demise his family
came to Iowa, purchasing a fine farm in Jackson township, Greene
county. Miss Jones now owns some of the most valuable land in this
county, returning to her an excellent annual income, and also
considerable city realty, including a number of residences which return
a good yearly rental. These investments have been judiciously placed
and while her affairs are largely managed by others, relieving her of
the control of arduous details, she yet gives general supervision to
her extensive business interests, and in so doing displays an aptitude
for successful management which has always been one of the strong and
salient characteristics of the family. She has a fine home in
Jefferson, commodious and spacious, it being the old Dr. Grimmell home
and an ornament to the city.
