In Memory of Emil Riddle
Emil Riddle was born October 13, 1895, and his age was 23 years, one
month, and 16 days. He entered the service July 26, 1918, and was in
camp four months and three days. For two years before serving his
country he had made his home with his brother James, who is engaged in
farming. A message had been received by the family that Emil was ill at
Camp Merritt, and two of his brothers, James and Frank, went to Camp
Merritt, remaining with him for five days. Shortly after their return,
dangerous symptoms must have appeared, for, a few days later, a message
was received that Emil had died of pleuro-pneumonia.
Surviving him are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Riddle, four brothers
and four sisters, Theodore, William, Frank, James, Mrs. J.R. Marack, of
Minnesota, Mrs. Agnes Kuchenker, of North Liberty, Abbie and Lydia. The
young soldier was a son of a pioneer family and was loved and respected
by those who knew him. Another gold star will be added for Johnson
county's heroes who made the supreme sacrifice.
The funeral was held on the morning of December 4, at 9:30 from the
home of his brother, James Riddle. The services following were held at
the Catholic church at Greencastle, and he was laid to rest in Suick
cemetery.
