J.M. Petersen of
Olin Dies on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
OLIN -- Johannes M. Petersen, 88, died
Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Anamosa Community
hospital following a brief illness.
Funeral services were held at St. John
American Lutheran church, Olin, on
Saturday, Nov. 14, at 1:30 p.m. Rev Harold
F. Tegtmeier conducted the service.
Interment was in Antioch cemetery.
Pallbearers included Ronald Paulsen, Bruce
Conwell, Steve Story, Lynn Babcock, Loren
Hartwig and Noel Koranda.
Mrs.
Kenneth Guhl was organist. Henry Biere was
soloist.
Johannes was born Sept. 17, 1881, son of
Peter Samuel and Magdalene Petersen in
Bordelum, Schleswig Holstein., Germany. He
was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran
church in Bordelum and received his formal
and Christian education there. When he was
17 years old, his parents emigrated to the
United States, but Johannes, being of
military age was not allowed to leave
Germany.
On May 12, 1907, he was
united in marriage to Pauline Conrad in
Bredstedt, Germany. From 1914 to 1918 he
saw active duty in the military forces
(German) during World War I, receiving the
Iron Cross for outstanding service.
He brought his wife and six children to the
United States, landing in New York on Nov.
12, 1923. The family settled in Jones
county where the rest of his life was spent
in farming. After living on various farms
in Jones county, he and his wife spent
their retirment years on a small acreage at
Newport Mills, northwest of Olin.
He
was a member of St. John American Lutheran
church, Olin, for many years. On May 12,
1969, the couple observed their 62nd
wedding anniversary with nearly all of
their family present to share in the
occasion.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline; six
children, Ann (Mrs. Emil Paulsen), Scotch
Grove; Peter Petersen, Hale; Christine
(Mrs. Paul Ketchum), Olin; Toni (Mrs.
Charles Hahn), Cedar Rapids; Magda (Mrs.
Leonard Hartwig), Hale; Johanna (Mrs. Otto
Koranda), Oxford Junction; 18 grandchildren
and 36 great grandchildren.
He was
preceded in death by his parents, three
brothers, six sisters and one
granddaughter. |
