The Stars and Stripes and the Indian head have
been painted on his fighting plane somewhere in France by
James Norman Hall of Colfax. With twelve other
members of the Lafayette escadrille the Colfax
flyer became a member of the United States air forces at the
front. Each of the flyers was granted a commission. Hall was a
sergeant under the tri-color of France. He was either given a
captaincy or first lieutenant's commission when given the oath.
