Cited in General Orders No. 13, Headquarters 90th Division, AEF, Apr 5, 1919. While the courage, heroism and sacrifice evidenced in the particular instances cited below is typical of the high morale of the division during its operations in the front lines, the Division Commander, nevertheless, desires to specifically record his appreciation of those named. The following named men of Ambulance Section, 315th Sanitary Train: Wagoner Wilbur E. Van Orman, ** ** **. The foregoing men distinguished themselves during the operation on the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne sectors between Sept 12th and Nov. 11, 1918, on many occasions by their faithful performance of duties under the most adverse conditions. Specifically: on Sept 23, 1918, while the roads leading from the St. Marie Farm to beyond the Vilcey-sur-Trey hill were wet and slippery and under heavy fire, each ambulance was required to make four trips each way during the night, avoiding shell holes or stopping to fill them and from time to time pausing to await the lifting of a barrage and then push forward during the lull; again, on Sept 28, 1918, on the occasion of the heavy action on front line, most of the casualties were evacuated from the advanced aid station of the 358th Infantry, loocated near Les Huit Chemins in the Bois des Rappes, and all roads leading to this station were under heavy artillery fire and direct observation for a large portion of the distance. Later, this company was on active service in the Meuse-Argonne front from Oct 22, to Nov 11, 1918, and distinguished itself by its enterprise and fearlessness in removing patients from battalion aid stations, sometimes within three hundred yards of the enemy lines and under his direct observation. During all this period the men named on the list evidenced absolute fearlessness and devotion to duty in succoring the wounded. Entitled to wear a silver star. (Vol 4 pg 3328)
