Leona Angeline Call,
daughter of Rev. Levi Nelson Call and Mary (nee Guyon) Call, was born
in Preston co. West Virginia in 1858. She removed to Iowa with her
parents & siblings as a young girl. The family lived in Hampton,
Franklin co. and in 1876, removed to Webster City, Hamilton co. Iowa.
Her parents raised their children in a home filled with books, music
and the love of learning. Miss Call earned her B.A. degree at the State
University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) in 1880, and was
awarded an M.A. degree in 1883. At the State University of Iowa, she
headed the department of Greek from 1885 until her retirement in 1908.
During World War I, Miss Call headed the Iowa Educational Division in
National Defense. She never married. |
