World War I Veteran's Flag
World War I Veteran's Flag

In my church in rural Dows, about 13 miles from Hampton, we found a handmade World War I Veteran's flag stuffed into a manilla envelope. It has some deterioration. The church is planning to frame and display it. We've contacted the Iowa State Historical and have received instructions. The flag lists names on the back. We're trying to locate these men, their rank, unit and where they served. I've found a few draft registrations, but not all. We believe 2 men died, but this hasn't been confirmed. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

The flag measures approximately 23"X33". It has a 6" band of red around a white field of blue and 2 yellow 2" stars. Some of the blue stars have blue-silver ribbons through the center and some have blue-silver rick-rack through the center.

Names are written on the back of the flag .... 16 stars and 14 names. The flag appears to have hung long side downwards. From top, left to right:

Roy Hackbarth Wesley Lemke Ralph Erickson

Lawrence Olson Osso / Ozzzo Beach (yellow star) Walter Fanslow

  Lee Hackbarth

Jessie Lemke Will Hawe Lee Lemke

  Carl Fanslow
