Hampton; 1875-1959 Admiral
William D. Leahy, commander of the battle force, who will
advance to the post of chief of naval operations the
first of the year, was born in Hampton, Iowa, May 6,
1875. He was appointed to the naval academy from
Wisconsin in 1893, served on the USS Oregon in
the Spanish-American war, had a wide experience in
command of ships during the World War and was awarded the
