Census

  NOTES

These names were taken directly from images of the 1940 census. The Page column number is the page found on Ancestry.com's images. The Sheet number is the physical number put on the page by the enumerator. Information in brackets is from other sources, which were consulted in an attempt to improve accuracy of the data, and usually consists of such things as maiden name, birth year and death year. Those sources might be Floyd county obituaries on IAGenWeb, Iowa Gravestone Photo Project, or social security death index.

In some cases the names as listed here may not be the same as those in the Ancestry.com search database. For example, Ancestry.com might index a name as "Smith, Warelzr" and we might list it as "Smith, Marilyn." It is highly recommended that you consult the actual census images to verify this information. If you do not find your individual on Ancestry.com using our spelling, try searching another name on the same page, then view the image.

This list is in the same order as on the actual census sheets. Unless missed, the "Head" designation indicates the head of house person, so in most cases the other names below it are in the same household, and could be a spouse, son, daughter, in-law, maid, lodger, etc.

Iowa State Census enumerations were conducted from 1850 until 1925.
Many libraries and genealogical societies have, or can obtain on loan, state
and federal census films. Contact your local agency for information. Or contact:
