Crowd Welcomes State Cage Champs at Maynard; Hairpins and cream Pie Slowed Team of 1924

It's hardly news now that the Maynard girls are the basketball champions of Iowa. although the cheers haven't quite died away.

But it is a fact that the fans of Maynard will never lose of the community and especially their pride in the girls who cooly won the state championship for the small town with the bit heart.

Maynard folks had their hunches a year ago. By late fall they were almost sure. And as the season went on, they knew that Mel Kupferschmid's squad was bound for Des Moines.

As the hundreds of people welcomed the Blue Devilettes home sunday, among the crowd was a few who recalled a similar tournament. A state tournament at Iowa Falls. The year was 1924.

One of these was Mrs. Lois Davis (nee Bing) now of Fayette. She was a member of the basketball squad from Maynard that reached the state competition losing to Hull 20-14 in the first round.

Another was Mrs. Nell Collier who was the first woman coach at Maynard in 1919. She now lives near Olympia, Wash., and is currently visiting her sister, Mrs. A. J. Fox in Fayette.

Others present form the '24 team were Mrs. Irene Silka Beebe of Sumner whose scoring record was a state mark until Norma Schoulte of Monona and Sandy Fiete of Garnavillo topped it in recent years; Mrs. Veerna silka Speak of George, Mrs. Lorraine Thiele Bradshaw of Oelwein, Mrs. Florence Thiele Wise of West Union, Mrs. Frances Rich Wammack of Maynard. Mrs. Carrie JOhnson Talcott of Randalia who played on the 1905 team was also present.

From the 1924 tournament, Mrs. Davis recalls that four of the girls were sick after eating cream pie. She modestly suggest that the illness of key players gave her a chance to play.

The big problem in practices, however, were the bone hairpins falling on the floor. The hazard was realized after one of Mrs. Davis' hairpins caused another player to slip and fracture a wrist.A solution was reached when the mothers made dusters for the girls to wear.
