GLIMPSE OF MISSIONARY LIFE IN LAND OF
CASTE
The Missionary Society members and many friends
met at the Methodist parsonage Wednesday afternoon, May 4, in
regular session and when all were assembled after the cordial
greetings from Mrs. Clinton, who received her guests in the hall,
Mrs. Collett in her usual fine way, made all feel welcome in
presenting the program numbers. The larger share of time was given
to the "Message from India"-a personal message by Margaret Paine,
assisted by her sister, Louie Blagg.
The group of listener were held almost an hour
as the tragedy, pathos and needs of that pitiful land became a vivid
reality as related by Margaret. While a very great deal has been
done to make life more bearable there, yet one can sense as never
before the anguish and dark new of these souls so burdened by the
curse of superstition and poverty, and underneath all of the
message: the brave sweet living of our missionary-Mildred Simonds-the
days of seeing actual service and the joy of the few friends in
their glad reunion so close to the shadow of the jungle there
breathed the spirit and promise of the loving One who once said "I
will never leave thee: I will be as the shelter of a great rock in
a weary land." At the close of this remarkable presentation of a
glimpse of India as seen by an American girl-traveler in the Orient,
the guests examined the fine display of brass brought home-each
piece done in exquisite hand work; and then a social time was
enjoyed in a friendly happy way during the dispensing of frappe and
wafers, served by Mrs. Helen Stanahan and Mrs. Gertrude Fox. About
40 ladies were in attendance.
