The Indians who committed the murders described in our last issue were soon afterward arrested at Fort Atkinson and examined before R. B. Olmstead a Justice of the Peace, and by him committed to the jail of Dubuque County. At the second term of the District court of Clayton county they were indicted by the names of Hee-gaw-hee-kaw, Waw-how-chaw-neck-kaw and Haw-kaw-kaw for the murder of Moses Tegarden. They were brought into court and being unable to procure counsel James Grant, afterward one of the most prominent and successful lawyers of the state, was appointed to defend them.  They were arraigned and each plead not guilty. A. change of vennue from Clayton county on account of the prejudice of the people was applied for and granted.
