Peter Strupp

Peter Strupp, who is engaged in blacksmithing and also carries on a general repair shop, is one of the recent arrivals in St. Lucas, but has already made his home there long enough to build up a good trade and be recognized as one of its early citizens. He was born in the Rhine Province of Germany, May 14, 1855, and his parents were also natives of the same province. His father was born October 9, 1809, his mother December 28, 1816, and their marriage was celebrated in 1840. They became parents of four children - Lena, who was born in 1842, married Bernard Marks in 1869, and resides in Germany with her husband and one child; Hubert, who was born January 6, 1848, married Elizabeth Weber, by whom he has seven children and they also reside in the Fatherland; Peter is the next younger; and John, who was born in Germany March 22, 1860 married Angeline Pauli. Their union has been blessed with four children, two sons and two daughters and they also yet make their home in their native land. The father of this family died March 3, 1889, but the mother is still living.

Our subject is the only one who ever came to America, and it was not until he was twenty-six years of age that he crossed the Atlantic. In 1881 he located in Kenosha, Wis., but after two months went to Milwaukee where he worked in a blacksmith shop. Later he was employed in the same capacity in Fayette, Mich., and in Escanaba, Mich., after which he went to Wrightstown. Returning to Kenosha, Mr. Strupp was married on the 21st of February, 1882, the lady of his choice being Miss Mary Schoettler, daughter of John and Lizzie (Eberhardt) Schoettler. The family is of German origin and with their children the parents crossed the ocean in 1864, becoming residents of Kenosha, Wis. Mrs. Strupp was born in the Rhine Province November 9, 1863, and her birth was followed by that of Anthony, who was born in Kenosha, Wis., where he yet makes his home, June 21, 1865, and married Susie Peterson; John, who was born July 23, 1866; Michael, born March 23, 1869, died March 3, 1888; Joseph, who was born November 23, 1872; Lizzie, May 6, 1875; and Peter, August 25, 1877.

Mr. and Mrs. Strupp began their domestic life in Minneapolis, Minn., where he worked at his trade for three months. He then returned to Milwaukee, Wis., where he was employed in a blacksmith shop for about two years, after which he spent five years in Kenosha. The spring of 1889 witnessed the arrival of himself and family in St. Lucas, where he purchased a pleasant home situated on three acres of land that has upon it a good barn, his blacksmith shop and many other improvements. Being the only blacksmith in the place and also an experienced workman, Mr. Strupp has a large and constantly increasing trade. He does a general blacksmithing and repairing business and is well deserving the patronage given him. As a citizen he takes a commendable interest in public affairs. In politics he is a Democrat, and he and his wife are worthy members of the Catholic Church at this place.

Mr. and Mrs. Strupp have an interesting family of four children - Lizzie, who was born in Kenosha, Wis., October 17, 1885; John Peter, in Kenosha, January 19, 1887; Anthony, in Kenosha, May 23, 1888; and Mary in St. Lucas, October 28, 1889. They also lost one child, John, their eldest, who was born in Milwaukee, Wis., February 9, 1884, and who died in that city.
