He was appointed by the government American consul at Ancone, in Italy, which position he resigned as soon as he could return with safety to Texas.” “In 1868 the radical party ran him for Congress in Hungary in the City of Pesth, in opposition to the great leader of the government party, Daek, but the government succeeded in defeating him by a small majority.” “His end was very tragic. In a moment of partial insanity he finished his life with his own hands. Thus died a true-hearted patriot.” “The Hungarian settlement was named New Buda in honor of the gallantry and patriotism displayed by the governor and his sons at the Fortress Buda in Hungary. The first mail route through the county was from Chariton to Garden Grove, thence to New Buda, then to Nine Eagles, since changed to Pleasanton, thence to Princeton, MO.” |
