| History: The land for the west side of the cemetery was given by the Shy family (for which the cemetery was named) and the east half from the Witter family. The first grave (unmarked) was for an Aker's child who lived nearby. The Shy Church (sometimes called the Union Chapel Church because it was non-denominational. was located just to the west of the cemetery. It was built about 1890 and torn down in the 1940's. There are some interesting stories about this cemetery: one monument has a rope carved into it marking the grave of a man who supposedly was hanged; another family had a baby girl born on a Thursday morning when tea had been served--so they named her "Thursday Mornin’ Tea." (See #9-25) Shy Cemetery is well cared for. |
