Decatur County Journal Leon, Decatur County, Iowa March 5, 1897 FEBRUARY TEACHERS' EXAMINATIONS. The following persons took the examination preliminary to obtaining a teachers' certificate last Friday and Saturday at the County Superintendent's Office: Davis City - SADIE SKALES. Decatur County Journal Leon, Decatur County, Iowa March 05, 1897 ENTERTAIN THE CLASS OF '97. MISSES STELLA TATMAN, MAUD METIER and ESTHER JACKSON entertained the class of '97 at the home of MISS IDA HEBENER last Friday evening. These social gatherings are very enjoyable ones and tend to strengthen the bonds of good fellowship between those who will embark on life's sea together. Apples, popcorn and delicious home-made candy were served as refreshments. The following members of the class were present: MISSES-- BESSIE MOORE, KITTIE BOYD, BESSIE ONEY, EDITH MCCOY, ROSS SHIELDS, ALETHA PATTERSON, MAUD STONE, MARY IRONSIDES. The Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, January 27, 1917, Page 1 Study Center at Grand River Saturday, Jan. 27th. The regular study center work in the manual training for teachers in the northwest part of the county will be held in the shop at Grand River on Saturday, January 27. Regular work with tools on the bench will be given. This is work closely related to the boys' club work of the state, and will be continued at the special study center to be held in Grand River two weeks later, Feb. 10. For this and other reasons a full attendance of rural teachers is urged. Unless more teachers attend at Grand River this manual training center will be taken to another point in the county. CHAS. B. Leon Reporter Leon, Decatur County, Iowa Thursday, December 7, 1922 'State Flag Given to Consolidated and Standardized Schools in Decatur County.' In a worthy effort to make the beautiful state flag of Iowa more generally known over the state, the Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution are presenting a state flag to all consolidated and standardized schools in Iowa, and recently sent to the Leon Chapter of the D.A.R., six state flags to be presented to Decatur County Schools entitled to receive them. The two consolidated schools are at Garden Grove and Leroy, and the four standardized schools are No. 3 Center Township, Miss WILMA GARBER, teacher; No. l High Point Township, MISS LANELLE CARTWRIGHT, teacher; No. 7 Franklin Township, MISS FLORENCE DAVIS, teacher; No. 4 Bloomington Township, MISS SYLVIA VANDEL, teacher. A standardized school is a rural school complying with the state regulations as to grounds and buildings, schoolhouse, equipment and care of the school room, library and supplementary readers, the teacher and the school and community activities. To become standardized, a rural school must have a rating of 80 per cent from the score card for the first year, 85 per cent for the second year and 90 per cent for every year thereafter. In making up the score, ground and buildings count l0 points, schoolhouse, 30 points, equipment and care of school room, 20 points, library and supplementary readers, 7 points, the teacher and the school, 21 points and community activities, 12 points. All standardized schools receive state aid to the extent of $6.00 for each pupil who has attended the school at least six months of the previous year, and this state aid is divided between the teacher and the school, one-half of the state aid being given to the teacher and other half is deposited with the other school funds of the district.
