The Maroons cinched their title as champions of southwestern Iowa by winning both games at Garden Grove last week when they played a club made up of the best players from Humeston and Shane Hill. The first game was played Thursday afternoon. "Humpy" was in the box for Leon and Sigler supported him, while W. Maytum and his brother, C. Maytum, the famous Shane Hill battery held the points for Humeston. The Maroons put up a great game and won with ease. Leon 11 -- Humeston 4. On Friday the second game was played. Jimmie Hurst pitched a magnificent game and was well caught by Sigler, his old catcher. Humeston had telegraphed for another pitcher and Leighton, of Iowa City arrived in time to pitch the game but the Maroons had no trouble in finding him for eleven hits which netted eleven runs while Hurst was only hit for four hits, making four runs. Hurst struck out nine men while Leighton fanned three Maroons. NOTES: Bill Broadus who has been playing third for the Maroons left for his home in Indianola, Monday. The Maroons have played l8 games and won l3. Two of the 5 games lost were with the Woodmen club of professionals from Des Moines. Wade Warner put his rabbit foot under second base at Garden Grove and someone stole it. He offers $500 reward for it as he claims the rabbit foot won all the games for the Maroons. No club can dispute the Maroon's title to Champions of Southwestern Iowa! 'A Humbling of Pride' The Leon papers are getting lots of consolation over the fact that their baseball club has at last defeated their hated rival -- the Savilles. Bitter as this pill is to swallow -- yea, much more bitter than worm wood -- still we submit to the inevitable and with as good grace as possible we humbly hand over the championship baseball belt of southwestern Iowa to the proud Maroons. We had fondly cherished the bright and alluring hope that the Savilles would wipe up the old mother earth with the Maroons and settle once and forevermore all right and title to the championship belt, but alas and alack, it has been ruled otherwise. The haughty Maroons having completely vanquished on the baseball diamond the idols of the Mt. Ayr "fans," and they can now go into winter quarters with the proud and enviable distinction of having fairly and squarely beaten the Savilles. Tears of regret moisten the editor's cheeks as he pens these lines, for surely the defeat of the Britons could not have been more galling as they passed under Caesar's yoke of bondage, and we now deeply sympathize with those ancient warriors for we fully realize what it means to be humbled in the very dust of humility. "The beauty of the Savilles is slain upon the high places; how are the mighty fallen!" Tell it not in Osceola, publish it not in the streets of Humeston; lest the daughters of the Leonites rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph." But the Record says to Leon rejoice, and again we say rejoice. You have defeated a foeman worthy of your steel and are entitled to all the consolation and glory there is in it. In the meantime the Record will cover our cupola with a garment of sack cloth, soak our feet in ashes and blandly listen to the lamentations of the mourners as they go about the streets. --Mt. Ayr Record. Mt. Ayr's "mighty Savilles" were beaten at their own home by the Osceola team in both games of ball played there this week. Osceola is now the champion team of southwestern Iowa. --Osceola Democrat. The Democrat has evidently overlooked the fact that the Leon Maroons are the champions of southern Iowa, having defeated all clubs this year, among them being Osceola, the maroons winning two out of three games with them. The Davis City Advance, Davis City, Iowa Thursday, September l5, l897 Last Saturday morning LEE CRAIG's boy, ORRIN, was working around the horses in the lot, when one of them suddenly caught him by the left arm above the elbow, and, lifting him from the ground, swung him around his head several times. The brute's teeth finally slipped off and the boy dropped over a fence and out of his reach. His arm was frightfully bruised and lacerated. Drs. Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa Thursday, September 30, l897 OWEN DEPEW, who has been the baker at Miller's for the past year, has opened a new bakery the second door north of the northwest corner of the square, one door north of Osborne's Implement Store. He has had the room nicely painted up and has put in a Hubbard portable stone oven, one of the best manufactured. He turned out his first batch of bread Tuesday, of l00 loaves and all but three loaves were sold before night. OWEN is a first-class baker and will certainly enjoy a large patronage. He will do an exclusive bakery business, making a specialty of fresh bread, buns, pies and cakes of every description. Copied by Cordelia Suzann
