Twice Told Tales - 50 Years Ago
November 11, 1965


Mayor Olin Rippey presented Kathy Draper a $25.00 United States savings bond for being named Young Career Woman of Leon for 1965. The event was sponsored by the Leon Business and Professional Women’s club. Second place went to Sharon Stapleton of Frances’ Beauty Shop and third went to Nancy Stewart a Central Community school teacher.

Thomas J. Moore, the Decatur County superintendent of schools, announced that his office received and disbursed a total of $58,532.89 in General State Aid to the schools of Decatur County.

The Leon Chamber of Commerce elected the following board members: Arch Stuteville, Don McGahuey, Dr. Tom Viner, Don Carson and Steve Young.

The junior class of Central Community presented the play “Skinned Alive.” The play was directed by Gene Knepper.

Dr. Elmo Barnum and Dorcas Redman, school nurse, attended the annual Interprofessional Forum on Vision Problems of Children and Youth at Drake University.

Those receiving service awards from Iowa Southern Utilities from Leon were Ray Spicer, 30 years; Gene Gilbert, 10 years; Paul Bennett, Dennis Johnson and Chuck McKern, 5 years.

Mr. and Mrs. Dave Nigh moved to Des Moines where Dave had accepted a position with the Hoxie Institutional Wholesale. They had lived in Leon for 12 years.

The Decatur County Historical Society held its monthly meeting at the Lou-Don Cafe. Speakers were Vaughn Smyth on his 45 years in the photography profession; Dave Thomas on ten unsolved murders that occurred in Decatur County and Ham Graves on disastrous fires over the years.

Senior Girl Scout Troop 237 helped serve tables at the Foreign Food Fair held at Vets Auditorium in Des Moines. From the Leon Troop were Mary Lee, Martha Viner, Kathy Collins, Becky Gilbert, Maurine Dobson, Kathy Blevins, and their advisor M.N. Viner. Others from Leon attending the fair were Mr. and Mrs. Loral Hullinger, Randy and Sue; Omar Akbar and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Elson and David and Rachel.

Winners of Hopkins Rexall Drug Eagle Stamp Questimate Contest were: first - Avis Collins; second - Connie Vanderflute; third - Gladys Leeper; fourth - Irene Meacham; fifth - Ruth Heick and sixth - Pearl Boyce.

Twice Told Tales - 50 Years Ago
November 18, 1965


Lynda Burchett of Grand River and Gordon Myers of Lamoni were selected as the two Decatur County 4-H members who received the KSIB radio station Record Book awards for 1965.

Lester Hullinger and sons of Pleasanton and Dennis and Mervel Hullinger of Lineville were planning to exhibit some of their Angus cattle at the 1965 International Livestock Exposition in Chicago.

A squad of 29 Central Community high school boys began wrestling practice under the direction of Coach John Morgan. Their opening match was against Greenfield.

The Woodland Willing Workers and the Busy Maidens 4-H clubs were guests of the High Point Hustlers at a roller skating party at Promise City.

Pictured working at the Leon Sale Barn were Col. Rolland Ball, Julian Frost, Russell Chambers and Willard Parmer.

The annual union Thanksgiving church service sponsored by the Ministerial Association was to be held at the Leon Assembly of God Church on Thanksgiving Day.

Twice Told Tales - 100 Years Ago
November 25, 1965


The safe at the business office at Graceland College was punched and the night watchman, Leonard Johnson, was slugged when he surprised two men. An undetermined amount of money was taken from the safe and papers and boxes were found strewn along Highway 69.

O’Bryan Brothers, Inc. announced that they planned to use the Boord Building to train additional employees. Their production needs couldn’t wait for the new building that was to be completed in July of 1966.

Lyle Coleman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earnie Coleman of Leon was a member of the play, “We’re All Guilty,” that was put on by Creston Junior College.

Some winners of a turkey at the Leon Turkey Days drawing were: Axel Jensen, Darlene Hamilton, Russell Goodman, Ben Clay, Florence McDaniel, Mae Smith, Mildred Gartin, Paul Bennett, Wendell Plym, Goldie Woodard, Mrs. Andrew Barry, Mary Ann Leeper, Helen McCullough, Dwain Bethards, Bessie Carper, Bert Kentner and Harry Olson. Fifty-nine turkeys were given away.

Thanksgiving dinner at the Cardinal Cafe was turkey or ham for $1.25.

The Central Leon girls opened the 1965-66 basketball season with a loss at the hands of Cambria-Corydon. Leading scorer for Leon was Sally Havens with 18 point. Leading rebounder was Connie Hembry with 9. Senior members of the squad were Peggy Henderson, Judy Hanthorn, and Vickie Robison; juniors were Susan Chastain, Kathy Collins, Linda Crouse, Cindy Havens and Pam Worden; sophomores were Marla Nauman, Karlene Bailey, Kathy Blevins, Judy Hembry, Mary-Kaye Moore, Coleen McGahuey, Vickie Stubbs, Ramona Showers, Judy Jones and Vicky Hamilton; freshmen were Debbie Redman, Leta Schamp, Bobette Rippey, Marilyn Mc- Gahuey, Peggy Higdon, Barbara Frost, Cheryl Houck, Jeri Rohde, Teresa Coleman and Jonda Hinds.

Marriage Licenses: Terry Cobb, 21, of Corydon and Pam McCarty, 19, of Leon.
