S. have decided to give a supper and literary entertainment for the benefit of the church on Thursday evening, November 9. They have ceiled and wainscoted their church and now must plaster the sides or it cannot be used this coming winter. They solicit your patronage and assure you a bountiful supper for 25 cents. Come and help. When you go to the polls don't forget to vote for James KESHLEAR. He is worthy of your confidence. Mrs. BOWMAN and daughter Josie started Friday for Burlington, Iowa to visit her sister there. She will be gone two or three weeks. Lucy and Edith EWING visited friends in Leon two or three days last week. Elder Harry V. ADAMS and family are staying at her fathers, B. D. R. TOPLIFF's. Elder BENNETT of the Baptist society preached in the L. D. S. church Sunday. Everybody from here went to hear the speech at Leon Monday. Perry EWING entertained about fifteen of the young lads and lasses last Tuesday evening at his home. M. B. EWING of Lamoni is hauling brick from his brother's yard here for the completion of Mrs. SALESBURY's house. All Halloween this evening. Everybody better take care of everything they value. Aunt Lucinda BISSELL went to Leon Sunday to stay several days. Stephen EDWARDS and wife of near Lamoni spent Sunday at her father's. Chicken thieves make nightly visits to hen roosts in this city. May JONES gave a party to her little friends last evening. Mrs. George CAMPBELL and daughter Bee were in Leon Saturday. Dale SYLVESTER went to Van Wert Friday to visit friends. Nellie BARKLEY of St. Joe, Missouri, is visiting friends in our city. Mabel HORNER spent Sunday with her parents here. N. P. BULLOCK and wife of Leon spent Sunday with relatives here. Iowa has gone republican by at least 30,000 majority. Ohio elects McKINLEY by 50,000 majority. Massachusetts, New York and Kansas are also reported to have gone republican. Mrs. Lucina CAVE of Marcellus, Mich., came in Tuesday, to remain. Frank STODDARD of Redding, Iowa, was in the city the fore part of last week. J. M. GORSUCH went to Albia, Ia., Tuesday to purchase a car load of calves. C. F. SMITH returned form Chicago Friday, where he had been with live stock. Jos. MATHER returned Monday from Leon, Ia., having been there a week tailoring. Misses Louie SMITH and Gertrude SEELY were at Andover, Missouri Saturday and Sunday. S. P. BASS and wife went to Davis City, Iowa, Tuesday to visit their daughter, Mrs. Carter SCOTT. Religion Literary meets next Saturday night at Students' Room of brick church. All are invited to attend. Mr. HARTWELL, a nephew of Mrs. R. M. ELVIN came in last week and will visit his relatives here for some weeks. Mrs. A. M. PYLE, who has been visiting her, returned to her home at Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday. Mrs. Liddie BURSE went to Oelwin, Iowa, Tuesday to visit her brothers, residing there. She will return soon with her brother, Elder John SHIPPY. H. S. GRANGER, a brother of the deceased Mrs. N. W. SMITH came in Tuesday from Phillipsburg, Kans. and attended the funeral of his sister yesterday. Esther DANCER returned from Kempton, Ill., Tuesday, accompanied by Mr. Wm. DANCER. The former will remain while the latter will return after a short visit among relatives. We hear the L. D. S. people at Davis City will give a supper and literary and musical entertainment at their church tonight. Proceeds to go to repairing the church building. Mr. and Mrs. N. COTTON and Mr. R. D. COTTON of Bulah, Neb., came in last Wednesday, a week ago yesterday, to remain during the winter, and probably longer. Mrs. COTTON is a daughter of Davis ENNIS. Mrs. Robert TURNER went to Leon yesterday. J. W. PARKER shipped a car load of potatoes to Leon yesterday. T. C. BROLLIAR made a business trip to Blythesdale, Missouri, last week. Frank STODDARD was in Leon yesterday on business, today he returns to Redding, Iowa. John WELLS of Staples, Ontario, came in Saturday to work at tailoring for Joseph MATHER. He comes to stay. Thomas ARCHIBALD, an employee of the Burlington Lumber co. of Burlington, Iowa, was in the city this week. Messrs. N. N. HAZELTON, John HARP, C. E. BAGGERLY and John GRAY went to Leon yesterday to attend court. Mr. W. E. MYERS and family of Carlisle, Iowa, arrived yesterday. Mrs. Myers is a cousin of Mrs. L. J. BARR's. They will visit a short time. Mrs. WHITCOMB of Redding, Iowa came in yesterday to visit her daughter, Mrs. E. C. BRIGGS, and other relatives and friends for a season. The following very complimentary notice of our new tailor, Mr. Joseph MATHER appears in the columns of the "Comber (Ontario) Herald," for November 2, 1893 - "A Staples correspondent writes as follows: It was expected that our esteemed townsman Joseph MATHER would have returned home again from the World's Fair but it is understood that pressing business engagements precluded his return, to the disappointment of his many friends throughout the village of Staples. His charity and benevolence shown to the bereaved widows, and orphans when the village was plunged into sorrow through the terrible explosion of a year ago, stamped him a man that shared the sorrow of others; his zeal always alert in the cause of temperance and Christianity, marked him a man who lived for the public good. Through failing health our worthy friend has had to leave his native country to sojourn in Lamoni, Iowa, where his meritous life no doubt will gain for him there, as it has done here, a universal love for our good Joe." The meeting called by the mayor for the purpose of organizing a volunteer fire company convened at the town hall Friday night and on the motion of W. W. SCOTT, who called the meeting to order, Dr. J. H. HANSON was chosen to preside. D. F. LAMBERT was chosen secretary. Addresses were made by Dr. HANSON, W. W. SCOTT, W. H. DEAM, O. L. FERGUSON, A. M. NEWBERRY and A. C. GEER, after which the following obtained: Resolved, That the chair appoint a committee of three to organize a volunteer fire company. The chair selected Wm. ANDERSON, W. W. SCOTT and O. A. | The Independent Patriot Lamoni, Iowa November 23, 1893 The recital given by the pupils of Miss Nellie DAVIS at the home of Mr. D. F. NICHOLSON on the west side Thursday night, was a complete success. Many of these pupils will no doubt make excellent musicians if they continue to work faithfully. We were very much interested in the recital on account of its bearing on the progress and refinement of the community. After the program which we give below was given, Mr. D. F. NICHOLSON in a very neat and quite original speech presented Miss DAVIS with an elegant photograph album, the gift of her pupils which she gracefully received with a few well chosen words: PROGRAM 1. | Leon Reporter, Leon, Iowa Thursday, November 23, l893 Winter is coming on, people are making preparations to meet it. Farmers are busy gathering corn; a great many are through. We are glad to say that MRS. BIBBY is slowly recovering after a long and severe siege of fever. They have surely had their share of sickness this fall. MRS. MOSE POWERS is reported no better. MR. DINGMAN is still very low; he has been compelled to keep to his room for a long time. We miss him very much as he is one of our best citizens. BEN DANIEL's baby had quite a severe attack of croup last week, but is all right at this writing. MR. WILLIAM GUNTER is conducting a singing school at Jack Oak School House every Sunday at 2 o'clock p.m. MR. FRANK DOBSON, MISS JENNIE DOBSON and MRS. ANNA NOBLE have commenced a course of music with MRS. HUSTON, of Leon. She is a well informed teacher and gives good satisfaction wherever she is known as a teacher. Some of our society girls seemed much displeased at a comic song sang by MR. WILL GUNTER last Sunday during singing school. MR. JESS WION is teaching our school this winter, he has given good satisfaction so far and is well liked by all. MOSE POWERS is making quite an improvement to his farm by building a big barn.
