The Decatur County Journal Leon, Decatur County, Iowa, 1891 JANUARY 1: T.H. SCHENCK succeeds MILLARD F. STOOKEY as Clerk of Courts. A joint debate is held at the opera house between ELDER F.C. WATKINS, of the Adventist Church and ELDER J.R. LAMBERT, of the L.D.S. Church. One MULLIN, of Decatur is tried for the larceny of a boy and fined $100 and costs. MRS. ANNIE WRIGHT died at her home at Van Wert. Installation of officers at Masonic Lodge, followed by a supper at the restaurant. The residence of R.H. JOHNSON in Eden Township, is destroyed by fire. JANUARY 8: The infant son of MR. and MRS. O.E. TULLIS died. I.O.O.F. install officers for the year 1891. MRS. J.M. GARDNER died at her home in north Leon. MRS. P.F. JOHNSON is adjudged insane and taken to asylum at Mt. Pleasant. JANUARY 15: MRS. A.E. CHASE received $3,000 from the New York Life Insurance Company on account of the death of her husband. The Methodist Sunday School purchase three hundred volumes for the Methodist Sunday School Library. FULLER & SIMPSON dissolve partnership. The Pocahontas Club gives a Whittier entertainment at the M.E. Church for the benefit of the Sunday School. The Decatur County Agricultural Society selected officers for the year 1891. The Baptists carry on a series of meetings at their church. JANUARY 22: ELZIE MARTIN is arrested by Deputy Sheriff Ledgerwood for seduction. I. HALDEMAN died at his home in Humeston. HON. J.W. HARVEY and R.L. PARRISH form a co-partnership for the practice of law. MRS. RACHEL JENKINS died at her home. BELLE MCCULLOM is arrested at Creston for drunkenness and sent to her home in Leon. JANUARY 27: MISS CORA SMITH is sentenced to the penitentiary by JUDGE TEDFORD for burglary. A son is born to MR. and MRS. WM. BROWN. A young man by the name of CLYMER is arrested for larceny. The trial of DR. MITCHELL for murder in progress. The jury returned a verdict of not guilty. JAMES FARRIS is boring a well for electric light plant. BARNEY FITZSIMMONS, a former resident of Leon, is shot in Creston, while engaged in a game of poker in a joint. FEBRUARY 5: J.A. HAWKINS purchased an interest in the grocery of J. HOFFHINES. FEBRUARY 12: MILLARD F. STOOKEY purchased an interest in the Bethany Republican. MRS. P.F. JOHNSON died at the asylum. PROF. BALLARD, the Red Oak poet, appeared before a large audience of Leonites. L. VAN WERDEN purchased MRS. CHASE's interest in the drug store of CHASE & VAN WERDEN. W.A. BRANNON was adjudged a spend thrift and the court appointed a guardian for him. FEBRUARY 19: Residence of JOHN ALLARD is destroyed by fire. The Farmers Institute in session. Death of MRS. RACHEL L. JOHNSON. A revival meeting is in session at the M.E. Church. FEBRUARY 26: The McMillan Opera Company exhibited at the opera house. The "white owl" appears at Drake's. G.A. BLOMBERG and MISS MAUD HELCHER are united in the holy bonds of matrimony. MARCH 5: The plant of the Leon Bottling Works is sold to GEO. GASKILL, of Chariton. The C.B. & Q. make an economical strike. A.N. FRASER, one of the oldest agents on the road, is laid off. REV. MITCHELL, from India, lectured concerning the habits and customs of its people. Literary entertainment given by the Senior Class of the High School. A. HOLLINGER is acquitted on preliminary hearing for the charge of rape. MAYOR ALBAUGH is re-elected Mayor. MARCH 19: Marriage of DAN D. TEW to MISS LILLIAN E. WARREN at Des Moines. MARCH 26: The death of BESSIE SANKEY, daughter of MR. and MRS. E.J. SANKEY occurred. GEO. VAN HOUTEN, State organizer of the Alliance, organized in Leon. Death of NELLIE BABCOCK in Denver, Colorado. GEO. ZIMMERMAN is arrested for boot-legging whiskey. APRIL 2: Death of JOHN ROBERTS at his house in Leon. Edison Electric Light Co. bring suit against the city for $1,500. Marriage of D.W. POTTS to MISS MAGGIE CHAPMAN. APRIL 9: W.J. SULLIVAN & SON open a grocery store. JOHN HORTON, of the Horton House, Davis City, died suddenly of heart failure. Death of LEWIS J. RUMLEY. Death of ALLICE E. GOODMAN MARTHA SMITH, of this place, is pardoned by Governor Boes. A mad dog is killed south of town. APRIL 16: Death of CHARLEY GIRDNER. APRIL 23: Death of H. ROBBINS. J.D. BROWN is elected delegate to the G.A.R. National Encampment at Dubuque. OLIVE E. CRAMER, a former resident of Leon, kills M.T. BORNE in Oklahoma. Fiftieth anniversary of the Methodist Church in Leon is celebrated. MAY 14 W.S. JOHNSON retires from the JOURNAL. MAY 21: STOOKEY & BROOKS assume control of the JOURNAL. PROF. M. SCHOENERT locates in Leon and establishes a musical conservatory. MAY 28: Resignation of REV. M. NOERR, of the Presbyterian Church. Graduating exercises of the Leon High School takes place at the opera house. Memorial Day is duly observed with appropriate exercises. JUNE 4: The last of the school house indebtedness is paid off. JUNE 11: At a meeting of the citizens the money is raised and site selected for a roller mill. The Cross building on the southeast corner of the square is completely destroyed by fire. JUNE 18 J.G. EARLY & SON, of Lineville, put in a stock of lumber in the I.R. ATLEE yard. Normal Institute is in session. Knights of Pythias Memorial Day is observed by that order. JULY 2: Death of MORRIS ALEXANDER at Elm Creek, Nebraska; brother of W.A. ALEXANDER. Marriage of CHAS. DUPREE SMITH, of Denver, Colorado, to MISS CAROLINE YOUNG. JULY 9: DR. J.W. CROFFORD arrested for counterfeiting. Installation of I.O.O.F. Officers. Death of MRS. LYDIA BINNING. JULY 16: The Leon infirmary reorganized. People's party convention met in Leon. REV. C.P. REYNOLDS, father of MRS. I.R. ATLEE, died at his home in Toledo. JULY 23: BROWN & HORNER dissolve partnership, DR. A. BROWN retiring. First concert given by the K.P. Band. WM. WOODARD purchased the fair grounds of the agricultural society. JULY 30: Death of WM. LOVING, one of the oldest residents of the county. AUGUST 13: M. HAUGHT purchased the opera house of E.A. DAUGHERTY. Storm of August 9th, which did much damage to growing crops. Old Settlers meet at Garden Grove on the 6th. AUGUST 20: Death of BRYANT O'NEILL, one of the leading stock raisers in southern Iowa. AUGUST 27: Death of RAYMOND HARVEY, infant son of MR. and MRS. J.W. HARVEY. The Republicans held their county convention and nominate officers. On the 21st MR. FRED TEALE and MISS EUGENIA SANKEY were married. In this issue appeared the announcement of the Leon High School. SEPTEMBER 10: Postmaster HARVEY is instructed to examine the fourth-class office in the county. The death of MRS. M.E. BECK occurred at her home in Leon. HON. H. BOYDSTON moves his family to Marshalltown. SEPTEMBER 17: County Superintendent, A.A. ROY is married to MISS LOU ARMEL at Holdridge, Nebraska. Musical entertainment at the M.E. Church under the direction of PROF. SCHOENERT. SEPTEMBER 24: Mysterious disappearance of a St. Louis traveling man. New scenery is placed in the opera house. OCTOBER 1: JOHN LEDGERWOOD takes charge of Ward's Hotel. OCTOBER 8: Senator Allison, U.S. Senator from Iowa, addresses the citizens of Leon. MR. and MRS. W.J. SULLIVAN celebrate their twentieth marriage anniversary. EUGENE R. VANDERPOOL is killed by a train while switching in the yards at the Q. station. Death of ROLLAND MILLER, the infant son of MR. and MRS. MODE MILLER. OCTOBER 22: Bridge across Grand River at Davis City is completed. OCTOBER 29: Col. Hepburn addresses a large audience in Leon. NOVEMBER 5: RUSH-PENNIWELL marriage. Halloween entertainment at Ward's Hotel. NOVEMBER 12: S. WOODMANSEE is quite badly hurt by the bursting of a shot gun. NOVEMBER 19: The whereabouts of DR. S.C. THOMPSON disclosed by death at Olympia, Washington. Death of MRS. JULIA HEBENER. Letter of ED. K. PITMAN explanatory of his relations with DR. THOMPSON appears. DECEMBER 3: Hunt & Van Etten appeared at the opera house. M. HAUGHT falls in business. DECEMBER 10: WM. THARP is injured by a falling scaffold. MISS RACHEL LUNDEGREEN is induced to return home by a bogus telegram, which she paid $3 for. RICHARD WILLIAMS, a colorad man from Leon, elopes with a white woman. FRANK BENNINGTON leaves unexpectedly with a number of disappointed creditors. DECEMBER 24: Trotting-bred colt sale. MR. and MRS. S.C. PENNIWELL celebrate their twentieth anniversary.
