Retail Stores, Business Enterprises, Professions

          The first retail store in the new town of Dallas Center, in 1869, was run by O. N. Steele in a shanty east of the railroad track on open prairie.

          At the beginning of the year 1879, Dallas Center included the following business firms:

Dry Goods, Groceries, Etc. – Melick & Fox; E. Fleischman & Co.; A. B. Smith; G. W. Zook.

Drug Stores – James Brainiff; I. G. Morgan.

Hardware – Townsend & Cartwright, hardware, groceries, furniture; Martin & Woodward, hardware, stoves & agricultural implements; J. Purington, hardware & tin shop.

Agricultural Implements – F. Hubbard.

Harness Shop – T. w. Ferguson .

Bank – O. Mosher, proprietor.

Bakery and Restaurant – Nazarene & Ringer.

Merchant Tailor – Charles Bomberger; cutting, fitting and making done.

Milliner Shops – Mattie Fleming; Mary Brockway.

Boot and Shoe Shops – E. J. M. Stevens; J. Narvey.

Meat Market – Clarey Brothers.

Blacksmith Shops – J. F. McGrath; Dan Collins.

Wagon Shops – F. Pinne & Balcom; Wm. Gorman.

Postmaster – O. N. Steele.

Jeweler – Jed Brockway, at the post office.

Land Office – Smart & Steele, office at the post office.

Grain Dealers – Schamel & Loughran; Kenworthy Brothers; also deal some in stock.

Stock Dealer – W. H. Brenton.

Lumber Dealer – J. S. Easton.

Hotels – Dallas Center House, Mrs. A. A. Perkins; Grant House, Mrs. Lucy Hutchinson.

Livery Barn – W. S. Jamison.

Insurance Agents – W. T. Allen; J. L. Loring.

Physician & Surgeon – B. H. Criley.

Dentist – A. E. Rawson.

Lawyers – J. M. Hoopes; O. Mosher; J. L. Loring

Justices – W. T. Allen; R. R. Richmond .

Notaries – O. N. Steele; J. M. Hoopes; O. Mosher;   J. L. Loring.

Carpenters – D. F. Neff; M. S. VanDusan.

Saloons – Henry Saunders; P. McGrath; J. Freund.

Newspapers – Dallas Center Globe, Samuel Sloane, editor.

Grist Mill – R. Roberts.

Planing Mill – C. Rathburn & Son.

          The above listing should include the “forty thriving business concerns” of the unofficial census report in 1879.
