- The M. G. R. club met with Mrs. Jones Friday.
- Henry Suckstorf and wife were in Denison Saturday.
- Henry Miller of Correctionville was in town Wednesday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Rickert spent Monday night in Denison.

- Chris Hoffer of Ricketts attended the dance Saturday night.
- Otto Faul and Mark Clark of Denison were in town Saturday.
- Jurgen Schroeder was looking after his farm interests in Ute Monday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Emil Kuehl returned from their honeymoon trip.

- Frieda Naeve and Ella Kahler came up from Denison Saturday to attend the dance.
- Howard, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Nicholsen, celebrated his birthday one day the week.
- Martin and Chas. Rossburg of Hinton, this state, attended the dance here Saturday night.
- The dance Saturday night was well attended and enjoyed by all. The Schleswig orchestra furnished good music as usual.

- A miscellaneous shower was held at the Peter Nielsen home Sunday in honor of Miss Margaret. Many beautiful gifts received.
- Last week 72 car loads of hay were shipped from Onawa station to the market, making a total of over 250 car loads shipped from there this winter.

- The Verein met at the John Ehler home Tuesday.
- Will Bielenberg was in Ricketts Saturday between trains.
- Several from here attended the Mask ball at Denison Monday.
- Henry Schmidt and Robert Naeve drove to Denison and return Tuesday.

- Pye and Chas. Jurgensen and C. Claussen were in Ricketts Tuesday between trains.
- Chas. Brown, who is working on the section here, spent Sunday at his home in Auburn.
- John Hamann and family left Saturday for Danbury where they will farm the coming year.
- Henry Saggau was among those from Denison who attended the dance here Saturday night.

- A large crowd gathered at the Peter Ernst home Sunday and spent the afternoon and evening in card playing, etc.
- On Monday a deal was made whereby Henry Boysen bought out the drug store heretofore owned by S. B. McGarvey.

- The Misses Iversen, Schiernbeck and Hamann were among those from Ida Grove who attended the dance Saturday night.
- There will be a necktie social and program at the Chas. Tamm school house Friday evening, February 25, admission 10c and 20c.

- H. B. Hause of Boyer was here Friday consulting with Dr. Schultz.
- The Bulletin reports twelve marriage licenses issued from the clerk's office the past week.
- Edna Tomkins of Denison attended the dance here Saturday night. She returned home Sunday.
- Leona Wieck, who is taking lessons in dressmaking at Ida Grove, spent Sunday with her parents here.

- A number of relatives gathered at the Fred Spahn home Friday in honor of his birthday. Refreshments were served and all had a good time.
- Coming! Box Social and Program Saturday eve, March 5th at the Henry Naeve schoolhouse, 1/2 mile east of Schleswig. Ladies requested to bring boxes. Everybody welcome.

- Hans Eggers and step son Frank Naeve of Andover are visiting here at the home of John Naeve. John and Frank Naeve being brothers.
- Alfred Moltsan, Frank Strain, Ed Heedum, Louis Boe and Carl Lund were business and pleasure callers in Schleswig on Monday - Soldier Tribune.

- Another base ball meeting will be held Sunday morning in the Schultz drug store. If you are interested in a ball team for 1910, plan to attend this meeting.

- Ernest Groneberg is certainly having his share hard luck this winter. As recorded in the Leader a while back, he is laid up with blood poisoning in his arm. Now six others of the family are confined to their beds with various ailments.

- Last week Tuesday Danbury suffered heavily from two fires. The first early in the morning, broke out in a drug store and destroyed it, along with the post office, Review office, barber shop and meat market which were in the same block. In the afternoon fire destroyed the new St. Patrick's school recently completed at a cost of $35,000.

- Last Friday Dr. Schultz performed an operation on a small daughter of Peter Groth. A couple of weeks before the child had been playing with some putty. Unnoticed she had force some of the putty into her nose. This hardened and caused the child much pain. The doctor was compelled to operate on the child to remove the putty. The child is now doing nicely.

- Mrs. Theodore Rohwer came over from Schleswig Friday to be present at the bedside of her mother Mrs. Brechwald, who has been very low for several days. - Record Era.

- The German Ladies Aid Society will hold a box social at the opera house Saturday evening, February 26th. An entertainment will be given before the social, this free to all. Ladies are requested to bring boxes, gentlemen well filled purses.

- A penny entertainment will be given at the Center school, dist. ? Morgan, on Friday evening, February 25. The children have a good program prepared and a fine lunch will be served at the close. Admission for men is 10 cents at the door. Inside many different amusements may be seen for a penny each. Everybody is invited.

- What might have been a serious accident occurred Saturday evening at the railroad crossing east of town. Carl Wellendorf was driving towards home with a wagon load of furniture. A freight train came around the curve as he was crossing the track. He did not hear the train coming as they did not whistle. The team however became frightened and instead of crossing the track started along the track towards the oncoming train. The team left the track before the train reached them and went into the ditch. As the train was going by the horses came close to the train and the caboose caught the hind wheel of the wagon and smashed up the wagon in good shape. The furniture was not hurt, and neither were the horses or Mr. Wellendorf.

- Ben Hollander is hauling mail on route 2 this week, Stegemann having a lay off.

- Mrs. Dickson of Illinois is visiting here with her parents Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Eifert.
- Chris Hansen of Armour, S. Dak., is shaking hands with old friends here this week.
- Minnie and Lena Wollert returned last Thursday from a two weeks visit in State Center, Iowa.

- Adam Krohnke and family left last week for Lyon county where they will make their home for a time.
- S. Johannsen sold his house this week to Mrs. Katrine Brockmann, the consideration being $1600.

- Misses Mary Burch and Anna Flynn, teachers in the public schools here, spent Sunday at their homes in Denison.
- Peter Mohr and family loaded their household goods last week to Lyon county where they will farm the coming year.

- Herman Peper and babe went to Denison Saturday.
- Miss Nellie Porter is visiting with her parents in Ute.
- Hugo Wiegand was in Ricketts Monday between trains.
- Earnest Carlsen of Battle Creek was in town over Sunday.

- Mrs. Morris and Miss Selander, teachers near here, spent Sunday in Denison.
- Lena Koerner is spending a few weeks in Denison with her sister Mrs. F. Timm.
- Jurgen Schroeder made a short trip to Jeffersen, S. Dak., last week on land business.
- Harry Allison visited at his home in Gibson, this state, a few days the past week.

- Paul Wollesen of Kiron was in town a few days this week helping move his butcher shop.
- Geo. Hoiten Jr. left Monday for Texas where he has a position as operator on the Rock Island road.
- Hans Kuehl of Battle Creek spent Sunday here at the home of his daughter Mrs. A. F. Christiansen.
- Willie Miller and family left last week for Bloomfield, Neb., where they will make their home for a time.

- Jochim Hansen of Galva was here a few days this week on business and shaking hands with his old friends.
- The box social which was to have been held in the Henry Naeve school house has been postponed on account of sickness.
- Mrs. John Lorenzen of this vicinity celebrated her birthday Monday. A large crowd gathered at the home and spent the evening in card playing and dancing.

- The box social held at the opera house Saturday by the German Ladies was a success. A short program consisted of singing and a short play. The baskets all sold at good prices.

- Peter Hollander and bride returned Thursday from their honeymoon trip to Chicago. They are now busily engaged in getting settled in the Honas Petersen house opposite the Green Bay lumber yard.

- Aug. Schultz accompanied Mrs. W. H. Schultz to Omaha Tuesday where she entered a hospital to take treatment for a time.

- Ed. Spahn and Will Abbe returned Saturday from Chicago where they had been for a few days. They had shipped some stock to Chicago and had remained there a few days to visit relatives.

- Wollersen & Thomas on the first of March purchased the butcher shop owned by Krohnke & Wiederick and took immediate possession. They moved the furniture from their old shop to the new building.

- Fred Becker and Barney Lorenzen left Saturday for Aberdeen, S. Dak., where they will work the coming year.

- Ruth Taggart of Wall Lake spent a few days the past week with her sister Hazel who is teaching in the Carl Friedrichsen district near here.

- Aug. Braase accompanied his nephew Julius Braase to Ida Grove Monday. On Tuesday Julius underwent an operation for appendicitis. He is getting along fine now.
- Hugo Wiegand left Tuesday with his household goods and farm machinery for Bronson, this state, where he has a farm. Mrs. Wiegand and children will leave the fore part of next week.

- Andrew Hollander had business in Charter Oak last week.
- A. G. Schultz did carpenter work in Ricketts the past few weeks.
- Mr. and Mrs. Chris Ernst were in Sioux City last week consulting a specialist.
- Amanda Burk left Tuesday for Lawton where she will visit for a time with her sister.

- Several from here and vicinity attended the dance at Kiron Friday night. All report a good time.
- Earnest Boock was appointed marshal to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Hugo Wiegand.
- John Krohnke and John Lohse left Tuesday for Calfax, this state, there they well take treatment at the springs.

- Frank Stock, John Nicholsen, Will Jepsen and Emil dutch painter are spending a few days this week hunting ducks near Mondamin.
- The first birthday of Lavonnia Stapleton was celebrated Wednesday. Many friends of Mrs. Stapleton gathered at the Jurgen Schroeder home and spent the afternoon. A fine lunch was served.

- Henry Laumback of Mapleton visited a few days at the Peter Ernst home.
- E. L. Champion of near Denison, candidate for County Auditor, was in town Friday.
- Mrs. H. D. Jones left Monday for Cedar Falls, this state, for visit with her sister Harriet.
- Harry Allison left Saturday for Sloan where he will work second for the Nye, Schneider, Fowler Co.

- Loretta Schmidt and Caroline Hollander spent Sunday in Omaha with Mrs. W. H. Schultz who is in the hospital there.
- Mrs. Will Nemitz and children of Ricketts are visiting here at the home of her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Schultz Sr.

- All debts of the Schleswig Dramatic Club have been paid and the money left from the play "Down by the Sea" has been turned over to the school to be used in buying books for the library.

- The German American Liberal Society met in Schroeder's hall Saturday. There was a large attendance. The next meeting well be Saturday, March 19. All Germans are requested to be present.

- A city caucus will be held at the city hall Thursday evening, March 15, 1910, at 8 o'clock for the voters of the town of Schleswig to nominate for office mayor, five councilmen, treasurer and assessor. Called by Aug. Schultz Sr.

- Amanda Burk returned Wednesday from Lawton where she had been visiting for a few days.
- E. Volkmann received $10.85 per hundredweight for some hogs that he sold in Chicago this week.

- Mrs. Girard was in Omaha the past week receiving treatment for her eyes, also visiting friends.
- Vick Davies and Mr. Warnick of Battle Creek are laying the foundation for Dr. Jones new office building.
- Chas. Christiansen celebrated his birthday Wednesday. A crowd gathered at his home in the evening for a big time.

- Mr. and Mrs. Peter Nielsen and daughter Amelia have been visiting with friends and relatives in Ricketts and Battle Creek.
- Mrs. Ernest Boock celebrated her birthday Sunday. A crowd of friends gathered at her home that day in honor of the occasion.

- Ruth Taggart returned to her home at Wall Lake Thursday after a short visit here with her sister Hazel. She was accompanied home by Ema Rickert who remained over Sunday.

- There will be a general meeting of the Morgan Township Cemetery Association at Schroeder's hall Saturday March 26th. All members requested to be present. John Jepsen, Pres., Hans Mohr, Sec.

- Paul Voss of Denison was in town Saturday.
- Geo. Hoiten visited a few days last week in Arcadia.
- Miss Nellie Porter spent Sunday with her parents at Ute.
- Rev. Wetzler conducted services in the Manilla church Sunday.

- Mr. and Mrs. Jochim Rickert are spending a few days in Denison this week.
- Herman Pipgrass of Holstein visited a few days this week with his brother Wm.
- Henry and Ferdinand Carsten of Holstein visited a few days this week at Wm. Pipgrass home.
- M. Detlefsen marketed some fine cattle in Chicago this week for which he received the top price, $8.10.

- Mrs. Jochim Hansen of Galva has been visiting friends and relatives here the past week or more.
- Chas Brown, who has been assisting John Willert on the section here for some time, left Saturday for his home at Auburn.
- Frances Blute, C & N.W. agent at Cushing, was in town a few days this week. He was relief agent at this station for a while last fall.

- Dr. Wagner was called to Kiron and to Charter Oak Wednesday to examine some emigrant's stock that was to removed from the state.
- Mrs. Paul Jepsen spent Sunday in Omaha with her sister Mrs. W. H. Schultz, who is in a hospital. Mrs. Schultz is improving in health and will no doubt return home soon.

- Margaret Kruse was tendered a surprise party by her young friends Sunday evening. The party was in the nature of a farewell, the Kruse family expecting to leave soon for Minnesota.

- Irene Garber is spending her vacation at her home in Denison.
- Magnes Tadsen of Wall Lake was seen on our streets one day the past week.
- Mrs. Ernest Hamann and children visited relatives in Ida Grove the past week.
- Mrs. Herman Boock of Manning spent a few days the past week with friends and relatives here.

- Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Brummer of Beaver Creek, Iowa, spent Sunday at the C. J. Clausen home.
- Mrs. Speck and son of Denison are visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. T. Kerner.
- The German American Liberal Society held a big meeting in Schroeder's hall Saturday afternoon.

- Misses Mary Burch and Anna Flynn are spending the week at their homes in Denison, the schools being closed here.
- Barney Boysen and Henry Hansen went to Pisgah Monday to get Dr. Schultz automobile, which had been there since last fall.

- Frank Lund, who has been working as lineman for the Schleswig Telephone Co., for the past few months, left Saturday for Omaha.
- J. R. Baxter, millionaire, a former Ida Grove citizen, is being sued in California for $100,000 by a young lady who nursed him in sickness, the charge being seduction. Baxter will fight the case.

- The Schleswig Dramatic Club is rehearsing for another play "A Country Kid" to be given at the opera house here Thursday evening April 7th. This is a fine play, good plot and funnier than the other one. Do not fail to attend. Tell all friends about it.

- Don't forget the dance at the opera house April 2.
- Hugo Krohnke was in Sioux City a few days this week.
- Mrs. M. A. Hollander spent Sunday in Omaha with Mrs. W. H. Schultz.
- Mary Hinz, waitress at the Brick Hotel, spent Sunday at her home in Ricketts.

- Mr. and Mrs. John Tamm of Denison spent Sunday at the Peter Johannsen home here.
- John Krohnke returned last week from Colfax much improved after his treatment at the springs.
- Hans Iversen, who works in the Green Bay Lumber yard here, spent Sunday at his home in Charter Oak.
- John Bruggen returned Monday to his home at York, N. Dak., after several weeks spent here with relatives.

- Roy Wedlock is managing the office of Nye Schroeder Fowler Co., at Ricketts in the absence of the regular agent.
- Dr. Jones accompanied H. M. Eifert to Des Moines Thursday where Mr. Eifert will enter a hospital for treatment.

- Confirmation services were held in the Church of Peace here Sunday. A large class was confirmed, there being 21 members.
- Heinrick Suckstorf celebrated his 72nd birthday at his home Sunday. Many friends gathered at his home in honor of the occasion.

- Emma Baeth, who is learning dressmaking in Denison was called home Saturday on account of the serious illness of her baby brother.
- The teachers from the Schleswig schools also most of the teachers from the schools in this vicinity attended teachers' meeting in Denison Friday and Saturday.

- Barney Boysen called at the Leader office Thursday to order the paper sent to his brother-in-law John H. Hamann at Danbury. Mr. Hamann formerly operated a farm in this vicinity but lately moved to Danbury.

- Pyrl and Avery Vickery of near Ida Grove were in town Sunday.
- Otto Faul and Mark Clark of Denison were in town Saturday.
- Harvey Wilox of Battle Creek is doing carpenter work on the C. J. Claussen house this week.
- Mr. and Mrs. Ruchti of LeMars are here visiting at the home of her brother Henry Hennings and family.

- Julius Braase returned Monday from the Ida Grove hospital where he underwent an operation last week.
- Andrew Hollander returned Monday from Council Bluffs. He had been serving on the jury that tried the famous Maybray case.

- Louis Ehler and Frank Jannsen of Ida county were in town Saturday. Frank Jannsen was accompanied home by Pye Jurgensen, who visited there for a few days before leaving for Germany the 25th.

- Mrs. Nellie Stapleton and babe, who have been spending the winter here at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jurgen Schroeder, left Monday for their home at Wendte, S. Dak. Mrs. Jurgen Schroeder accompanied them as far as Ute, returning Tuesday.

The Town Election

The regular town election was held Tuesday March 29th. The following officers were elected, each for a term of two years:

Aug. Schultz, Mayor; Aug. Braase, A. P. Hollander, A. F. Stegemann, F. C. Spahn and Jurgen Schroeder, councilmen; P. C. Hollander, treasurer; Henry A. Boysen, assessor. The result of the vote on the fire ordinance was 71 votes for and 15 against.

- John Willert and Anna Kolholf spent Sunday at the former's home in Auburn.

- Clyde Jones of Ida Grove visited his brother Dr. Jones a few days this week.
- Herman Boysen and Henry Christiansen spent Sunday at the Hans Miller home near here.
- Dan O. Day of Danbury was in town Tuesday. Where here he purchased some of the drug stock from the Boysen store.

- Pye Jurgensen left Friday, by way of Denison, for Germany where he will visit relatives and friends for a few months.
- Peter Ernst celebrated his birthday at home Monday. A large crowd gathered at this home in the evening for a good time.

- The home talent play "A Country Kid" which was to have been held the 7th, has been postponed. The date will be announced next week.

- At the Referee's Sale of land in Denison Saturday, Thos. Hollander purchased the 40 acres that has been advertised in the Leader the past few weeks, the price being $107.50 per acre.

- J. H. Spahn sold his property at Lawton last week and has moved his family, back to Schleswig where he will make his home for the present. Their many friends welcome them back to Schleswig.

- School opened Monday, only to be closed again Tuesday on account of so many pupils being absent. Those who had the measles are troubled with weak eyes and it was thought best for them not to study for another week.

- Carl Rathje was in Ida Grove Monday.
- Henry Kuehl celebrated his birthday one day last week.
- F. N. Olry, Julius and Theresa Rohwer were in Denison Sunday.
- Mrs. ___ Riessen enjoyed a visit last week from her sister Miss Reitz of Charter Oak.

- W. F. Schmidt and family returned last week from Germany where they had been visiting.
- Friends and neighbors gathered at the Louis Kuehl home one day last week to help Mr. Kuehl celebrate his birthday.

- Mrs. John Bottger and son Herman of Minnesota arrived here Saturday. This family will again make their home at Schleswig.
- Dr. W. H. Schultz and Magnus Hollander spent Sunday in Omaha with Mrs. Schultz. Mrs. Schultz is improving rapidly and will soon be able to return home.

- Hazel Taggert, who teaches in the Carl Friedrichsen district, is spending a weeks vacation at her home in Wall Lake. She was accompanied to Wall Lake Thursday by Birdie Berg who spent Sunday there.

- Mrs. Roy Wedlock and babe spent the past two weeks with relatives in Deloit.
- Fred Jochims left Saturday for Lester to visit his son Herman who is farming near there.

- Peter Hollander and S. B. McGarvey attended the meeting of the Maple Valley Firemens Association in Battle Creek Wednesday as delegates from the Schleswig Fire Department. They speak very highly of the Battle Creek firemen as entertainers.

- Several from here attended the dance in Kiron last Thursday night.
- John Moeller says it rained hard in Chicago Sunday when he was there.

- Otto Faul, Archie Theobald and Mark Clark of Denison were in town Saturday.
- Mrs. Emil Boock and daughter Zanet returned Monday from Ida Grove where they had been visiting for a few weeks.

- The dance here Saturday night was fairly well attended and all seemed to have a good time. Music was furnished by the Schleswig orchestra.
- Chris Hoeffer, who has been working second in the Green Bay yard at Ricketts, has been given charge of that company's yard at Charter Oak.

- Mrs. Louis Evers and children, also Miss Sara Lafrantz, of Denison spent Sunday at the Peter Hollander home here. Mrs. and Mrs. Hollander are sisters. (sic)

- Hans Iversen, who has been working the Green Bay yard here for some time, left this week for Ricketts to work in the yard there. Herman Bottger is working in the yard here now.

- Emil Boock and Theo. Rohwer were in Denison Thursday.
- Will Jepsen left Tuesday for Montana to visit his brother.
- Mrs. Henry Rien of Omaha visited relatives here the past week.
- Peter Perry and Will Antrim of Charter Oak were in town a couple of days last week.

- Harold Wedlock of Deloit is spending a few days here with his brother Roy and family.
- Mrs. Fuester of Omaha and daughter Sophia of Rockwell, New Mexico visited a few days the past week with friends here.

- Mrs. Luella Hover and daughter returned Monday from Denison where they had been spending a weeks vacation. Mrs Hover teaches near here.
- Last Friday Ernest Boock sold his house to John Spahn, the consideration being $1800.00. Mr. Boock moved into the house vacated by the Kruse family.

- Henry Klotz of Holstein arrived in town this week and took up the position as cashier in the Baxter Reed & bank, which position was recently vacated by Henry Boysen.
- The opening ball game of the season will be held Sunday afternoon on the old diamond east of the track between the Hayes team and Schleswig. Be sure and attend. Admission 25c, ladies free.

- There will be no Sunday school next Sunday, April 10th.
- W. W. VonCourt, the Ute barber, was in town Monday.

- Hazel Taggart returned to her school duties in the Carl Friedrichsen district Saturday after a week spent at her home in Wall Lake.
- Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Waldro autoed over from Glidden, Sunday to see their grandson at the Dr. Wagner home, Mrs. Wagner being their daughter.

- Chris Kruse and family left Saturday via Denison for St. Hilaire, Minn., where Mr. Kruse has a farm. There many friends regret their departure, but wish them the best of success in their new home.

The First Game

The first base ball game of the season was held on the diamond here Sunday between the Schleswig and Hayes teams. The game was a close one, Schleswig winning by the score of 5 to 4. The game was by no means (unreadable), but considering the fact that it was the first game, everyone did good work. The following is the lineup.

On Sunday the Schleswig team will play two games, one with Morgan and one with Ricketts. The first game, with Morgan will be called at 1:30 sharp, the game with Ricketts taking place immediately after the first game.

Board of Equalization met in City Hall Monday, April 4, 1910. Called to order by chairman Schultz at 2 o'clock p.m. Members present: Mayor Schultz, Councilmen Braase, Stegemann, Hollander, McGarvey and Rickert; absent Schmidt.

Moved and seconded that the report of the assessor be accepted. [carried] Moved and seconded that the Board adjourn. [carried] Aug. Rickert, Clerk.

Council Proceedings

Council met in regular session at city hall April 5, 1910. Called to order by Mayor Schultz at 7:30 p.m. Members present: Stegemann, McGarvey, Braase, Hollander, Schmidt and Rickert. Minutes of previous meeting read and approved.

Moved and carried that the report of Mayor be accepted. Moved and carried that the reports of clerk and treasurer be accepted. Moved and carried that the following bills and salaries be allowed and ordered paid:

Be it resolved that the part of Railroad Street, starting at a point 42.95 feet south of SW corner of Block 6, then south 36 feet, then northeast to a point 34 feet east of starring point, be condemned for fire house purpose. Aug. Schultz, Mayor. Aug. Rickert, Clerk.

The new council convened at 9:30 p.m. Mayor and councilmen took the oath of office. There were three nominees for clerk - J. C. Claussen, F. N. Olry and Aug. Rickert. Moved and carried that the council vote by ballot on clerk. Vote resulted: Rickert 3, Olry 1, Claussen 1. Rickert was elected clerk for the ensuing year.

Mayor Schultz appointed Ernest Boock marshal and street commissioner for ensuing year. Moved and carried that Ernest Boock do the water pumping for the town. - Minnie Schultz is clerking in the Schultz drug store.
- Mrs. H. D. Jones returned Monday from Denison where she had been visiting.
- Miss Elma Bottger of Des Moines arrived here Wednesday for a visit with her parents.
- John Ehler and wife autoed to Ida Grove last Thursday to call on Mrs. Richard Ehler who is in the hospital there.

- Mr. and Mrs. Henry Reinking and sons Fritz, Chas. and Will and families visited in Cushing last week at the Aug. Reinking home.
- Fred Jochims and wife left Tuesday for Lester, this state to visit for a time at the home of their son Herman, who is farming near there.

- Mrs. Berndts, with a son and a daughter, of Denison spent Sunday at the home of her son John and family. John Berndts is bar tender in the John Krohnke saloon.
- A social dance was given in the dining room at the Brick Hotel Tuesday evening. Nearly 20 couples were in attendance and all seemed to have a good time. Music furnished by the automatic piano in the hotel.

- Mr. and Mrs. John Krohnke and son Vernie spent a few days the past week in Bronson at the Hugo Wiegand home. They report the Wiegand family getting along fine and being well pleased with that part of the state.

- Mrs. R. E. Wedlock is spending the week with relatives in Deloit.
- Mrs. B. S. Andresen and babe spent Sunday with relatives in Denison.
- The German Ladies Aid Society met last Thursday with Mrs. K. Friedrichsen.
- Mrs. Henry A. Peterson and son Ralph are spending this week with her parents in Onawa.

- John Spahn last week bought about 50 head of cattle in this vicinity which he expects to ship.
- Peter Sonis and wife of near Odebolt visited a few days at the homes of Honas Jochims and Jurgen Spahn.
- The Illinois Central stockyards, also water tank and 9 stock car, at Deloit burned to the ground one day last week. The fire was set by an engine.

- In the "Twenty years ago" items in the Vail Observer mention was made of a blizzard that took place in April 1890. It was the worst blizzard of the year.

- On Wednesday John Schwenn received a doll from the Philippine Islands. It had been sent by Mr. Schwenn's brother, who is out there, to Mr. and Mrs. Schwenn's baby girl.

- Albert Christiansen and family left last week with their household goods for Battle Creek where they will make their home in the future. Albert will clerk in his brother's store there.

- The Grant and Morgan ball team played at the Luke Kramer home Sunday, the Grant team winning by the score of 8 to 3. The Grant battery was Belman and Williams, the Morgan was Christmus and Miller. Morgan plays with Schleswig Sunday.

- Jud Brown is spending this week at his home in Hasting, Neb.
- Harry Berendes arrived Thursday from Gregory, S. Dak., for a visit with relatives and friends.
- John Schwenn returned Tuesday from St. Hilaire, Minn., where he had been with a car of household goods belonging to the Chris Kruse family.

Be it ordained by the city council of Schleswig, Iowa.
That there be fire limits established as follows:
( a list of lots in Blocks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 given here)

Buildings erected on these lots must be built either brick, stone or cement, or may be built of frame coated with asbestos paper and covered with steel siding and fire proof roof, all back and side openings must have steel shooters. Outbuildings must be built of same material.

Ordinance No. 45

Be it ordained by the city council of Schleswig, Iowa.
That there shall be no frame buildings rebuilt or repaired that are destroyed by fire or repaired that are destroyed by fire or decayed by weather to the extent of sixty per cent, and under no circumstances shall there be building built and veneered with a brick wall, in the fire limits specified in Ordinance No. 44.

- Birdie Berg and Hazel Taggart spent Sunday at the former's home in Denison.
- Hans Iversen, who is working second in the Green Bay yard at Ricketts, spent Sunday in town.
- Mrs. Wm. Schmidt celebrated her birthday Saturday. A crown of ladies gathered at her home and spent the afternoon in merrymaking.

- The ball games scheduled for last Sunday were not played on account of bad weather. Next Sunday the Ricketts team will cross bats with the Schleswig team on the home diamond. Game called at 2:30.

- Aug. Rickert spent a few days in Omaha this week.
- Ella Kahler spent Wednesday night in Denison.
- John Nicholsen spent a few days in Omaha this week.
- Work on the new office building of Dr. H. D. Jones is progressing rapidly and it will soon be ready for occupancy.

- A number of lady friends gathered Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Henry Buck to help her celebrate her birthday.
- Mrs. M. A. Hollander and Caroline Hollander went to West Side Wednesday to attend the funeral of a Miss Jensen, a sister to Miss Alice Jensen.

- The Northwest suffered a severe freeze during the past week that no doubt killed most of the fruit. The continued warm weather in the month of March had caused all of the trees to leaf out and all of the fruit trees to blossom. The loss of fruit in Iowa is estimated to be about ten million dollars.

- The Crawford county Sunday school convention will be held in the Schleswig schoolhouse at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 24th. This is for the benefit of every Sunday school in the county, and everyone should be there. There will be an interesting and instructive program. Everybody welcome. Come.

- Will Jepsen returned Wednesday from his trip to Montana.
- Johannes Hardar of Minnesota is visiting friend in this vicinity.
- Last week Chas. Jurgensen bought a Buick automobile from Barney Boysen.
- Friends and neighbors gathered at the Lo?is Witt home Sunday to help Mrs. Witt celebrate her birthday.

- Mrs. Pat Copps of Spencer, Neb., arrived here Tuesday for a visit with her sister Mrs. Hans R. Hansen and family near here.
- A Young People's Society will be organized at the schoolhouse on Sunday evening at 7:30 o'clock. All young people are invited to be present.

- A cement sidewalk is being laid in from of the A. F. Hansen harness shop and in front of the lot to the south. The contractors recently finished putting in a cement sidewalk at the church. By the end of the season there will be very few board walks left in our town.

- On next Wednesday the Hopkins Bros. lady base ball team will cross bats with the Schleswig team. These teams will play two games, one called at 3 in the afternoon and the other at 8 in the evening. The ladies carry their own lighting plant and the grounds in the evening will be light as the day. After each game a wrestling match will be held between Reeves, who travels with the ladies and someone from Schleswig. There will be six lady players in the team. Remember the date.

- The G. L. club met with Mrs. Henry Krohnke Wednesday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Jurgen Krohnke are visiting relatives in Sioux City and Cherokee.
- Henry Timm and wife, and also Henry Timm Sr. and wife of Ricketts attended the show here Wednesday night.

- Terry's Uncle Tom's Cabin Co. played to a capacity crowd Wednesday night. Everyone seemed well pleased with the show.
- Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rickert and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Boock autoed to Manning Sunday and spent the day at the Herman Boock home.

- A birthday party was held at the Gustav Else home Saturday the occasion being the birthday of Mr. Else. Many friends attended and all had a good time.
- Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Hansen and son Magnus spent Sunday at the A. Paulsen home. While out hunting Adolph shot one grey squirrel that measured 14 1/2 inches.

- The Boock & Boysen automobile garage, located west of Schmidt's store, is being torn down to make room for the new brick furniture store soon to be erected by C. Gottburg & Co.

- The fire department was called out last Friday to put out a fire on the right of way. Sparks from the engine set fire to the dead grass, which in turn set fire to a pile of poles belonging to the Schleswig Telephone Co. The fire was put out before much damage was done.

- The Schleswig ball team went to Ricketts Sunday where they were defeated by the Ricketts team in a farcical game, by the score of 22 to 6. Schleswig used five pitchers but to no avail. Next Sunday, the weather permitting, the Hayes team comes here for another game. A game will also be played between the boarders at the Brick Hotel and the town. Both games promise to be interesting.

- Frank Reitz and Albert Maas and wives of Mapleton attended the Sons of Herman dance here last Friday.
- Mrs. Jochim Rickert celebrated her birthday last Friday. In the evening a crowd of friends gathered at the Rickert home for a good time.

- A letter from H. M. Eifert, who is taking treatments in Des Moines for rheumatism, states that he is slowly improving in health and also learning to walk again, altho as yet his arm is badly crippled. His many friends hope for his speedy recovery.

- The Sons of Herman dance last Friday night, and the dance Saturday night were both well attended and the dancers all seemed to have a good time. Music was furnished at both dances by a brass orchestra. The next dance will be on Wednesday immediately after the close of the evening ball game.

- Frank Jones and family moved their household goods here from Ida Grove this week and are most busily engaged in getting settled in the Krohnke building over Stock's barber shop. Mr. Jones is working in the Green Bay lumber yard. We welcome this esteemable family to our town.

Base Ball

On Sunday the home team crossed bats with the Hayes team. The game was one well played and was close and exciting until the eighth inning when the Hayes team pounded out eight runs, winning the game 13 to 6.

The battery for Schleswig was Schroeder, Koontz and Jepsen; for Hayes Curry and Fobes. This makes a game apiece for these two teams and the next one will be waited for anxiously as it will no doubt be good, the teams being very evenly matched.

On Wednesday the advertised Hopkins Bros. Lady Ball Team of Des Moines crossed bats with the home team in a well played game. From the first the result was easily foreseen, the local team taking a lead in the first inning and keeping it thruout the game. The home team was assisted by Faul and Freed of Denison who did the battery work. The rest of the team was local talent and the boys deserve credit for the good game they put up.

Miss Fay pitched for the Bloomers for part of an inning but was knocked out of the box. A man pitcher was them put in but he shared a like fate. "Smoke" Madigan, an ex-Puebelo southpaw pitcher was then put in the box and, tho batted rather hard at times, stayed the rest of the game. Clark of Denison umpired the game.

In the evening a game of indoor baseball was played by lamp light the locals being defeated 11 to 8. This was a close score considering the fact that it was the first time that several of the home team had ever seen an indoor baseball. This game was played on a much smaller diamond than baseball, but the general principals of the game were the same. Madigan and Reeves were the battery for the girls, Schultz and Vaughan being the battery for the locals.

- The Sons of Herman of Oom Kruger lodge No. 17 are requested to meet on Decoration Day, May 30, at the home of Hans Baeth, and from there march to the Morgan cemetery to decorate the graves of their brethren. J. H. Jepsen, President.

- Henry Schroeder and Chas. Christiansen were over from Schleswig Wednesday. While here Mr. Christiansen purchased the 320 acre farm belonging to Dan'l Barnhardt near Cushing. We understand Chas. has bought it for a home and will move onto it as soon as possession is obtainable. E. A. Christiansen closed the deal. - Battle Creek Times.

- Julius Andresen is now working second in the Nye Schneider Fowler Co's., yard here, in place of Roy Wedlock who resigned.

- The new Wedlock & Brown restaurant opened up this week in good shape. They will keep on hand all kinds of bakery goods, ice cream, candy, cigars, etc.

- Will Naeve and Julius Peters left Tuesday for Ridgewater, S. Dak., where they expect to work this summer.
- Ed Kuehl celebrated his birthday Friday. Many friends and neighbors gathered at his home and all had a big time.

- On Saturday Hugo Krohnke bought one of the fine new 40 horsepower Overland autos. These are certainly fine machines.
- Mr. and Mrs. John C. Moeller were in Denison Saturday to see Nick Lafrantz who is sick there. Mr. Lafrantz is Mrs. Moeller's brother.

- Boock & Boysen got in two fine 40 horsepower Overland touring cars the past week and sold them as soon as they came. They are expecting three more soon.

- Many of the lady friends of Mrs. Adolph Cook gathered at her home Monday. The party was in the nature of a farewell, as the Cook family will soon move to Oregon.

- Mr. and Mrs. Will Lawson and babe of Omaha left Tuesday after a couple of weeks spent here at the Jurgen Jebens home. Mrs. Lawson is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jebens.

- Mrs. H. M. Eifert and daughter Mrs. Dixon were here last week and packed up their household goods and shipped them to Des Moines where Mr. and Mrs. Eifert expect to make their home for a time.

- Sara Hoiten spent Saturday and Sunday with friends in Holstein.
- Several in town have been sick the last couple of weeks with quinsy.
- Sadie Vickery of near Ida Grove is visiting here with Sara Hoiten.

- Mrs. Jurgen Schroeder and Mr. and Mrs. F. N. Olry were in Denison Saturday.
- Mr. and Mrs. Paul Voss of Denison spent a few days the past week visiting friends here.
- The Will Jepsen saloon changed hands this week, Matt Lorenzen buying it from Jepsen, the consideration being $9000.00.

- A. B. Lorenzen, wife and son of Denison spent Sunday at the Peter Hollander home. Mrs. Hollander is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzen.
- Hans Iversen of Ricketts was among those who attended the show here Friday night. He came upon the track, having a track attachment for his bicycle.

- Last week Hugo Krohnke sold his farm near Boyer to Henry Henning and took the Hennings Hotel in part payment. He then sold the hotel to Henry Krohnke.

- Mr. and Mrs. John Naeve, Mrs. Chas. Naeve and Mrs. Dohrman left Monday for their homes in Clinton county after several days spent visiting relatives and friends in this vicinity.

- Amanda Burk is clerking in Schmidt's store during the absence of Elma Lorenzen.
- Louis Evers, wife and children of Denison spent a few days the past week visiting friends and relatives.

- Henry Naeve has the record for high test of cream. On Wednesday he sold some cream to A. F. Hansen that tested 60.
- Birdie Berg, who has been teaching school southwest of town, left Monday for her home in Denison, her school having been dismissed for the summer.

- New cement walks have been laid the past week around the Theo. Rohwer and Andrew Hollander homes, also across the street in front of the Peters and Hollander homes.

- In the last issue we erred in stating the scores of the ball games with the ladies. The afternoon game was 8 to 3 in favor of Schleswig instead of 8 to 4. The evening game was 11 to 10 in favor of the girls instead of 11 to 8. The home boys made better showings than we gave them credit for in the last issue.

- While riding horseback Tuesday Bonny Iwen had the misfortune to break and arm. The horse stepped in a hole and fell, throwing the boy to the ground. When he fell he lit on his left arm, breaking the large bone below the elbow.

- The weather being so bad Monday that it was impossible to do any work, the people spent the day in buying, selling and trading property. On that day two autos were sold. John Krohnke bought the white Buick car of Ernest Boock. Will Schroeder bought one of the new 40 horse power Overland, of Boock & Boysen.
