Medical Society Directories
There has been quite a history of the medical profession in Clinton county. The following is from "One Hundred Years of Iowa Medicine: Commemorating The Centenary of the Iowa State Medical Society 1850-1950" (Publication authorized by action of the House of Delegates, April 20, 1949, under direction of Board of Trustees and editorial supervision of the Historical Committee, Iowa State Medical Society). Regarding Clinton, it says:
"The society was organized in 1857; reorganized and incorporated in January 1869; by-laws revised and codified in 1874. Quarterly meetings. After third reorganization in 1874 only regular graduates in medicine were admitted.
FIRST OFFICERS listed: President A. B. Ireland of Camanche; secretary-treasurer, P. J. Farnsworth of Clinton; librarian, L. Langan of DeWitt; censors, D. Langan of DeWitt, G. W. Frost of Bellevue and C. W. Myers of Clinton.
The original Clinton County Medical Society embraced a membership from Clinton, Jackson, and Jones Counties, as well as Whiteside County, Illinois. Membership, 21.
Reorganized April 13, 1903.
OFFICERS: President, G. A. Smith of Clinton; secretary, E. L. Martindale of Clinton; delegate, F. J. H. Sugg of Clinton."
