STEHBEN, AGED 60, A HIGHLY RESPECTED RESIDENT OF THIS CITY SINCE 1883, DIED SUDDENLY SATURDAY EVENING AT 11:15 O'CLOCK AT HIS HOME, 304 NORTH 8TH STREET FOLLOWING A STROKE OF APOPLEXY. HE HAS BEEN AILING FOR THE PAST SEVEN YEARS DURING WHICH TIME HE SUFFERED A SLIGHT STROKE. HOWEVER, HE HAD CONTINUED HIS DUTIES DURING THAT TIME AS FOREMAN FOR THE CLINTON WATER WORKS CO. HAVING BEEN IDENTIFIED WITH THE CONCERN FOR NEARLY 40 YEARS. DECEASED WAS BORN MARCH 18, 1867 IN SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN, GERMANY, AND WAS A SON OF THE LATE FRANZ AND MARY STEHBEN OF SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN. IN 1883 HE CAME TO AMERICA AND DIRECT TO THIS VICINITY WHERE HE HAD ALWAYS RESIDED. JULY 20, 1893 HE WAS UNITED IN MARRIAGE WITH MISS EMMA WINKLER BY THE REV. THEODORE STEEGE OF ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CHURCH. TO THIS UNION SEVEN CHILDREN WERE BORN. THREE PASSED AWAY IN INFANCY. FRATERNALLY, MR. STEHBEN WAS A MEMBER OF LYONS LODGE I.O.O.F., LYONS ENCAMPMENT, 21 I.O.O.F AND PIONEER CAMP 1 MODERN WOODMEN OF AMERICA. HIS DEATH CAME AS SEVERE SHOCK TO HIS IMMEDIATE FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS, AS HE HAD APPARENTLY BEEN IN HIS USUAL HEALTH SATURDAY. MR. STEHBEN WAS A GREAT LOVER OF HIS HOME, A KIND FRIEND AND NEIGHBOR AND TRUE CITIZEN AS WELL. SURVIVING HIM ARE HIS WIFE, THREE SONS, JOHN STEHBEN OF ROCKFORD, ILL., HAROLD AND ARNOLD STEHBENS OF THIS CITY AND ONE DAUGHTER, MRS. ROY REUSCHE AND TWO GRANDCHILDREN, CLIFFORD DONALD SHEPHERD AND RAYMOND ROY REUSCHE. ONE BROTHER, ONE SISTER AND TWO STEP-BROTHERS RESIDE IN GERMANY. THE FUNERAL WILL BE HELD TUESDAY AFTERNOON, WITH SERVICES AT THE FAMILY HOME AT 2 O'CLOCK. THE REV DANIEL HOGAN PASTOR OF THE COMMUNITY CHURCH WILL OFFICIATE. INTERNMENT WILL BE IN OAKLAND CEMETERY. THE I.O.O.F RITUAL WILL BE HELD AT THE SERVICES AT THE GRAVE.
SUPERINTENDENT S. L. MEEKER OF THE CLINTON WATER WORKS CO. TODAY PAID HIGH TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF MR. STEHBEN, WHO HE SAID HAD BEEN EMPLOYED BY THE COMPANY ABOUT 40 YEARS AND WAS REGARDED AS ONE OF ITS MOST VALUED EMPLOYEES. FOR 25 YEARS MR. STEHBEN HAD BEEN EMPLOYED ON OUTSIDE WORK AND IN THAT QUARTER OF A CENTURY HAD PROBABLY CALLED AT ALMOST EVERY HOME IN CLINTON. YET NOT ONE SINGLE COMPLAINT WAS EVER RECEIVED RELATIVE TO HIS CONDUCT.

This record identified FRANZ HEINRICH STEHBENS, A native of Holstein, Germany, renounced his allegiance to the Government of Holstein and announced his intention to become a citizen of the United States in the District Court of Scott County on January 8, 1865. On February 4, 1867, the District entered in the record that FRANZ H. STEHBENS had satisfied requirements of citizenship and awarded him citizenship of the United States.

EMMA STEHBENS, MY GRANDMOTHER WAS MARRIED THREE TIMES. FIRST TO HEINRICH STEHBENS AND AFTER HIS DEATH IN 1929 SHE MARRIED WILHELM DETLEFSEN OF DENISON, IOWA IN 1931. SHE DIVORCED DETLEFSEN FOR CRUEL AND INHUMAN TREATMENT WITH THE DIVORCE FINAL ON SEPTEMBER 23, 1935. SHE RETURNED TO LYONS, IOWA WHERE SHE LIVED UNTIL HER DEATH. FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS SHE RAISED THE THREE SONS OF HER DAUGHTER, MAE REUSCHE, WHO DIED FROM CANCER IN 1935. IN ABOUT 1943 SHE AGAIN WAS MARRIED AND THIS TIME TO A LADEHOFF. SHE DIED IN HER SLEEP FROM A HEART ATTACH IN MARCH 1945.

TODAY IN MERCY HOSPITAL AFTER A SHORT ILLNESS. FUNERAL SERVICES WILL BE HELD SATURDAY AT 1:30 P.M. AT THE PAPE FUNERAL HOME, WHERE THE REPOSES. THE REV. PAUL H. BURGDORF PASTOR OF ST.
