FUNERAL ON WEDNESDAY
News of Death Came as a Shock to Friends Who Were Unaware of His Condition.
Daniel J. Murphy of 542 Camanche Avenue died at 5 o'clock yesterday morning at Excelsior Springs, Mo. where he went two weeks ago. The news of his death comes as a shock to all friends, few of whom were aware of the fact that he had been failing in health for some time, and that his condition had been considered as serious.The body will be brought to Clinton for burial and is expected to arrive here at 12 o'clock tonight arriving over the L & ? railway. The funeral will be held Wednesday morning with services at St. Mary's church.
In the passing of "Dan" Murphy, as he was known to all acquaintances, Clinton loses a good citizen, one who will be long remembered by his friends. When the news became known about town yesterday that he was dead, the expressions of sorrow for the bereaved family were numerous. "Dan" Murphy was a home-loving man and his best enjoyment was that of being with his family. He was of an unassuming disposition, yet, a man who knew the world and understood it, and by reason of understanding it, placed great value upon the worth of friendship. Mr. Murphy was never known to speak other than good of his fellow man, and this characteristic trait, together with many others of a commendable nature endeared him to all who knew him. Those who knew him best were his best friends. "Dan" Murphy was a good man and will be missed. Several months ago Mr. Murphy's health commenced (unreadable) medical skill seemed to to offer only temporary relief. During the Christmas season his family and friends were given encouragement, and it was believed that he was improving. Two weeks ago in company with Mrs. Murphy, he went to Excelsior
Springs, Mo., and only a few days ago word was received that he was feeling better than he had felt in months. Thus it was that the news of the step came as a shock.A message was sent to the family home in this city Saturday night saying Mr. Murphy was dying. Early yesterday morning another message one telling of his death, was sent from Excelsior Springs. Both were delivered at the Murphy home on Camanche Avenue at the same time yesterday. The sad story was told in a message that was first received and read: "Father died at 5 o'clock this morning."
Daniel J. Murphy was born at Tewksbury Mass. on April 18, 1855, and came to Clinton when a small boy. Nov. 7th, 1877, he was united in matrimony to Miss Mary Grimes of this city. Surviving him besides his wife, who was with him at Excelsior Springs when he died, are four sons and one daughter: Frank and Daniel of Duluth Minn., and John, Edward and Miss Eileen of this city. He is also survived by two sisters Mrs. J. L. McCarthy of Clinton and Mrs. F. Mulligan of Omaha.
Mr. Murphy was for many years in the employee of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Company, and at one time was foreman of the company boiler shops. He was also formerly actively identified with the Star Boiler Works of this city and well-known in business circles.
The deceased was a member of Horse Shoe camp, M. W. A. and St. Edwards Council, Knights of Columbus.
Frank and Daniel Murphy of Duluth Minn., and John Murphy and Leslie Grimes of this city have gone to Excelsior Springs and they will accompany Mrs. Murphy on her sad homecoming journey, arriving tonight.

on 07 Nov 1877 in St. Mary's, Clinton, IA. Mary was born on 11 May 1859 in
Galena, IL. She was christened in 1859 in Galena, IL. She died on 13 Oct 1925 in
Clinton, IA. She was buried on 15 Oct 1925 in St. Mary's Cemetery, Clinton, IA.

MRS. D. J. MURPHY
Mrs. D. J. Murphy, widow of the late Daniel J. Murphy, task quietly away at 650 o'clock Tuesday morning at the family home, 542 Comanche Avenue.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mary's Church at 9:00 Thursday morning.Mary A. Grimes eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Grimes, was born May 11, 1859, at the Galena, Ill. When 14 years of age, with her parents in family, she moved to Clinton where she has since resided. Her death brings the first break in the Grimes family circle. On Nov. 7, 1877, she was married to Daniel J. Murphy, who preceded her and death but 12 years ago. To this union were born nine children, one daughter and five sons passing away before their mother.
She is survived by two sons, John of Clinton and Edward J. of Davenport, and one daughter Mrs. Harry Kimball at home, all of whom were at her bedside when the end came. There remain also for sisters, Mrs. J. T. Cullen, Miss Celia Grimes and Miss Ella Grimes of Clinton, and Mrs. W. A. Lockman of Chicago, and three brothers, T. W. Grimes of Butte, Mont., J. A. Grimes of Duluth, Minn., and LP Grimes of Clinton, and 14 grandchildren.
Mrs. Murphy had been ill for a number of years, suffering from a complication of diseases. Ever a patient sufferer, she rallied from each severe sick spell, taking her place in her wide circle of friends and relatives. On Friday she suffered a relapse, which rendered her condition critical, and resulted in her passing Tuesday morning, surrounded by her loved ones.She was a devout Catholic, and earnest worshiper at St. Mary's Church, ever lending at helping hand in distress in sorrow, her gracious manner and native wit endeared her to an ever widening circle of friends. A good mother and loving homemaker have returned her the greatest rewards from life. She was affiliated with the Ladies auxiliary to the B. of R. T.

E. J. ('Nips') Murphy Dies of Heart Attack; Rites at 9 Tuesday
Edward J. "Nips" Murphy, 51, internal revenue agent for the U. S. government for the past two years, salesman for the Standard Oil Co. for 18 years prior to that, and one of the greatest football players ever to compete in eastern Iowa in his Clinton high school days died of a heart attack at 1:20 p.m. Saturday.Death occurred at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Paul McManus, 3132 McKinley avenue, while he was visiting there. His own home was at 206 East Rushholme street, Davenport. Mr. Murphy suffered a heart attack in May and was convalescent for several months, but he resumed his duties in September and seemed to be an excellent health.
Funeral services will be held to in the Halligan funeral home at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, followed by recquiem mass epic Church of St. Paul the Apostle at 9 a.m. Interment will be in Holy Family Cemetery. The rosary will be used recited in the funeral home at 8 p.m. Monday.
STARRED ON GRIDIRON.
It was in 1913 in 1914 that 'Nips' Murphy a short, slight but extremely speedy quarterback, starred for Clinton high school football teams that scored victory over Davenport, Rock Island and other rivals. The team was coached by Coach Osborne and used the famed Osborne shift which broke Murphy and other backs loose for long runs. The year after his last championship team there Osborne went to Northwestern college, Naperville, Ill., as coach.From Clinton, "Nips" Murphy went to Notre Dame University where he played on the freshman team. He left school of February 26, 1918 to enter the Army during World War I.
GASSED.
Serving with Co. L, 132 infantry, he was gassed during the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He received his discharge from the Army on Jan. 21st, 1919, and entered St. Louis University from which he graduated
three years later.He was born in Clinton, July 13, 1895, but on completion of his education he moved to Davenport and
soon entered the employee of the Standard Oil Co. He was married to Helen F. Schladitz September 7, 1920 in St. Anthony's Church, by the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. William ? Bulger.For several years he was a star with the Rock Island Independents football team, winning a number of
close games against the Davenport Athletic club and other foes with dropkicks.He was the past commander of Davenport post No. 26, American Legion; a member of Loras council, Knights of Columbus, and does the Fourth Degree of that order; and a member of the Holy Name society of the Church of St. Paul the Apostle.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen F. Murphy; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret H. McManus, Davenport,
and Miss Marion E. Murphy, at home; one sister, Mrs. H. B. Kimball, Clinton and one grandson, Edward
J. McManus, Davenport. His parents, three brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

DAVENPORT -- Services for Helen Murphy, 95, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Davenport, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. Legion Auxiliary poppy memorial service at Halligan-McCabe Funeral Home. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery, Davenport.
Visitation will be 3-9 p.m. today, with a 7:30 p.m. rosary at the funeral home.
Mrs. Murphy died Sunday at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Davenport.
She retired in 1951 as secretary to the Rev. John McEniry, principal at St. Ambrose Academy, Davenport.
She was a graduate of Brown's Business College, formerly of Davenport.
Helen Schladitz married Edward Murphy in 1920 in Davenport. He died in 1946.
She was a member of the church, St. Alphonsus Senior Citizen Club, Quad-City Plus 60 Club, Lake Women's League and Legion of Mary. She was past president of St. Paul Altar and Rosary Society and American Legion Auxiliary Post 26 and a life member of World War I Legion Auxiliary, Barracks 1504.
Memorials may be made to St. Alphonsus School, Davenport, and the church.
Survivors include a daughter, Marian (Mrs. Charles) Van Camp, Davenport; ten grandchildren; in 20 great-grandchildren.
