Obituary: 07 Mar 1895, Copy (Source: "Obituary," At his home in this city, on
Sunday, March 3,1895 of paralysis, Mr. Jacob Feldman, aged 72 years, 10 month
and 11 days. Jacob Feldman was born in Baden, Germany, April 22, 1822 and came
to America in October 1851. He located in New Jersey from which State he came
to Whiteside Co., Ill. He married to Christina Schwartz in 1858, which union
was blessed with two children, one of whom died in infancy, the other, Jacob
Feldman, Jr. dying a few years ago. The deceased was a member of the
Protestant Reform church, a quiet and peaceable man, a good citizen and had a
large circle of friends who esteemed him greatly for his kind disposition. He
was a memeber of the independent order of Odd Fellows having been initiated in
Grove Lodge No. 257, of this city July 10, 1877 and was highly respected by
all members of the fraternity. He leaves an aged widow, a daughter-in-law,
three grand children, one brother and two sisters to mourn his departure. The
funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Presybterian church
conducted by Rev. J. W. Skinner. After the services the body was taken in
charge by the Odd Fellows, escorted to Grove Hill cemetery where the last sad
rites were prefomed by that order.)

Obituary: copy (Source: "Obituary," Mr. G H Feldman was born in Helmsheim,
Baden, Germany, May 11, 1826 and died of cancer in the stomach in Mt. Pleasant
Township, Jan 27th 1883, aged 56 years, 7 months and 16 days. Mr Feldman
emigrated to American in May 1854, landing at Philadelphia, where he married
Dorothea Rosway the following September. In 1857 he removed from Philadelphia
to Mt. Pleasant township, where he has resided ever since. His wife died in
December 1876, and two years later he married Rosina Mack, who with the four
children of this first wife survive him. In 1878 he bacame a member of Grove
Lodge No 257 I.O.O.F. and was hightly esteemed by not only the brothers of the
Order but by all who knew him, as a friend and brother. He was buried by the
Order, services being held at the Universalist church, sermon by Rev.
C.A.Lander. He leaves in addition to his family, two brothers and many warm
friends to mourn his death. May God bless the bereaved family and be their
comfort in affliction.)

The February number of "The Woman's Viewpoint, a magazine published at
Houston, Texas, has under the head of "Interesting Texans," a picture of Miss
Emma L. Meyer, formerly of Morrison, together with an interesting article
relative to her personality and the position she holds as a business woman,
she having been for the past few years assistant cashier of the Guaranty
National Bank of Houston. The article tells of a personal interview with Miss
Meyer, and while it would be in its entirety be of much interest to her many
friends in Morrison, salient paragraphs only are quoted below. "If this be a
simple tale, simply told, it is not because Miss Emma Lee Meyer, assistant
cashier of the Guaranty National Bank (unreadable) best of material for ""how
I succeeded" story, but rather because with her mathematical accuracy and
matter-of-factness, Miss Meyer insists on knocking from under all the romantic
props of her accomplishments. She denies that she ever dreamed dreams or lost
a wink of sleep over being a banker in a big city--in fact she had no reason
to suspect it when she was engaged as a stenographer by a little struggling
bank on the city's outskirts five years ago. But whether she was the magic or
not, it is non exaggeration to say that from the moment of her connection with
the bank it prospered, and as Houston grew it has grown by leaps from a
suburban bank to a city bank, from a down town bank to an up town bank, and
finally from Travis street to its own splendid new quarters in Main street.
However, there is a reason for everything under the sun and it does not
require the pleasant half hour accorded the writer behind the scenes to
explain why Miss Meyer hold her present position of trust. The reason is not
for to see as one stands facing her while at her duties. She works with quiet
force before which difficulties of both bank and public melt as before a
summer's sun.
The magnetic effect upon her own sex has led to the creation of a woman's
department of which she is head where women may come for advice in financial
puzzles and where assistance is given those who are unfamiliar with business
regulations. Besides her many routine duties Miss Meyer has charge of the
correspondence, the statements and the auditing.
Miss Meyer, who delights in study prepared herself to be a teacher and then
decided that she liked every thing about the idea but the teaching and so
without giving it a trial took a business course. Her first experience was in
a railroad office in Houston, and she later returned to her home city where
she held a position in the Smith bank for a number of years returning to
Houston with relatives after the death of her mother. M(?) Dyer (unreadable)
of (unreadable) bank that to much cannot be said of her value to the
institution. Miss Meyer says, "I do believe that there is nothing that man can
do but that a woman can do as well or a little better than he can. All she
requires is the opportunity, and I think that though a woman never wishes nor
is called upon to leave her home, she should take a business education for
herself and fit herself for intelligent business contact. She believes that
there should be women in in every office. "They raise the morale", she says,
"and see to the neatness and thoroughness of things in general and of this I
am certain, if all business women were suddenly to stop working everywhere,
men would be the loud (unreadable] howlers. On their own word the Guaranty
National would howl (unreadable) unearthly howl.

Calvin Howard a pioneer resident of the county died at 8:30 o'clock last
evening in the home, 2230 Liberty avenue at the age of 88 years. The body will
repose in the home until Friday after which services will be held at 2:30 p.m.
in the Rockwell Mortuary chapel, the Rev. C. O. Beagle officiating. John
Calvin Howard was born March 25, 1845 in Green county, New York and came to
Iowa at an ear ly age, his parents settling in Camanche. As a youth he worked
in the sawmills of Clinton and later in the Peterson Bell box factory retiring
at the age of 75 years. He hauled the stone used in the foundation of the
first public school building in Clinton, the present Washington building. He
was one of the few survivors of the Camanche tornado of 1870 (should read
1860). He was married March 27 1864, to Julia Etta Hatfield who became the
mother of four children, three surviving, Nelson Howard, Mrs. Jessie Goddard
and Mrs. Musa Runyon, all of Clinton. Mrs. Howard died in 1877. In 1879 he was
married to Anna Miller who became the mother of six children, four surviving:
Mrs. Elizabeth Healless, Mrs. Gertrude Meinert, Mrs. Minney Cawley and Mrs.
Pearl Jeffers, all of Clinton. She died in 1892 and in 1900 he was married to
Flora Feldman, who is left with their daughter, Dorothea. There are 35
grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and two great grandchildren, one of the
great grandchildren was born this morning to Mr. and Mrs. Ray Goddard.)
