The Goddard Family
The Aug. 26, 1988 issue of the Clinton Herald carried a story about a family reunion of the grandchildren of Jessie and Harry Goddard. Some hadn't seen each other for 40 years. Thanks to Jan Hanson and the FCCFH for sharing it with us.
John Goddard and Miriam Honeyfield were married in Gillingham, Dorset, England 20 July 1858. John was born in England 14 Feb 1836 and died 16 June 1896 in Chancy. Miriam was born in England 18 Dec 1836 and died 15 Oct 1927 at the age of 91. They had 15 children, one of whom died at birth. They came to the US in 1871, first to Floyd Co., IA, removing to Chancy in 1886 where they opened a general grocery store at 1150 Liberty Ave. The family lived at 1158 Liberty Ave. The photo is of John Goddard standing in front of the general store and post office in Chancy. John was Chancy postmaster until the time of his death. Miriam then took over until 1910.
One of their sons was Harry John Goddard. He married Jessie Howard (second photo) 05 Mar 1889 in Clinton. They had 12 children, two of which died shortly after birth.
