Wm. Balls of Elkport
was arrested Friday and charged with assault and battery.
He was brought before Justice George Ehrhardt, who
sentenced him to 15 days in jail, which was suspended on
payment of costs. ~Clayton County Register, 27 Jan. 1944 ~~~~ Cletus Roling, 20, of Dyersville, was sentenced to one year in jail by Judge W. L. Eichendorf Friday. He pleaded guilty to charges of forgery. Roling is to be paroled to the sheriff as soon as he obtains employment and will be required to make restitution and pay the costs. ~Clayton County Register, 3 Feb. 1944 ~~~~ Dewey Hensel of Watson was sentenced to the state penitentiary at Fort Madison "until released by law" by Judge W. L. Eichendorf. Hensel plead guilty to a charge of assault with intent to commit murder, arising from the shooting of Mrs. Frank Havlicek at her home in Watson, the evening of 25 Jan. ~Clayton County Register, 17 Feb. 1944 ~~~~ Sentences of 30 days and three months, respectively, were imposed on Hubert and Alex Yaeker, Guttenberg, by Judge M. M. Cooney here Monday. The brothers pleaded guilty to a charge of illegal transportation of intoxicating liquor. ~Clayton County Register, 24 Feb. 1944 ~~~~ William Blum of Dubuque appeared before Judge W. L. Eichendorf last Friday charged with illegal transportation of liquor. Blum was fined $500 and costs. Confiscation proceedings have also been started against Blum's car. ~Clayton County Register, 09 Mar. 1944 ~~~~ Fred Barker of McGregor was picked up intoxicated on a public highway last Saturday night by Patrolmen Meinhardt and Longstead. He was fined $75 and costs by Justice of the Peace George Ehrhardt. ~Clayton County Register, 16 Mar. 1944 ~~~~ Joe Hansen of Dubuque was fined $500 and costs by Judge M. M. Cooney after pleading guilty to illegally transporting intoxicating liquor. Hansen had been arrested after 14 cases of Wisconsin whiskey was found in his car. Confiscation proceedings against Hansen's car have been started. ~Clayton County Register, 23 Mar. 1944 ~~~~ Pvt. George F. Knitsch, son of Frank Knitsch of Guttenberg, who had been reported A.W.O.L. from Camp Maxey, Texas, was turned over to Military authorities in Des Moines Monday by Sheriff E. W. Carlsen, who picked him up in Guttenberg. Alva Hulbert, who was involved in a morals charge recently and arrested, has been committed to the county jail for six months as a result of a revocation of a parole by Judge W. L. Eichendorf last Thursday. Hulbert had been paroled to Valley Behrens in 1941 after a charge of indecent exposure had been brought against him. The recent charge was a violation of the parole. ~Clayton County Register, 11 May 1944 ~~~~ Charles Vickery of Monona, two Prairie du Chien girls, one 14 years old, and Robert Wikan of Elkader were picked up in Strawberry Point last Wednesday on a morals charge, by Sheriff E. W. Carlsen. Vickery was bound over to the grand jury and is being held in jail, failing to post $1,000 bond. One girl pleaded guilty to the charge of lewdness on a county attorney's information filed by H. K. Roggensack before Justice George Ehrhardt and was sentenced to six months in the women's reformatory at Rockwell City and paroled to the Sheriff. The younger girl was turned over to the juvenile authorities in Prairie du Chien and Wikan was released on bail. ~Clayton County Register, 18 May 1944 ~~~~ Mr. and Mrs. John Waalk of St. Olaf were arrested Sunday by Sheriff E. W. Carlsen for drunkenness. They were brought before Justice Ray Barton, who fined them $10 each and costs. Vernon Karrar of Elkader was arrested Sunday by Deputy Sheriff Arnold Mueller. He was brought before Justice Ray Barton and charged with drunkenness. He pleaded guilty and was fined $10 and costs. The fine was suspended upon payment of costs. ~Clayton County Register, 25 May 1944 ~~~~ Merle Olson lost his drivers license and was fined as the result of an accident in which he ran into a parked truck for which he was charged with drunken driving. Judge W. L. Eichendorf fined him $300 and costs and his drivers license was suspended. Joe William Woods of Marquette was arrested for assault and battery Friday. He was brought before Justice Albeck of McGregor, who sentenced him to 30 days in jail. Albert Wach of Littleport was arrested and charged with reckless driving last Wednesday. Justice Ray Barton fined him $5 and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 8 June 1944 ~~~~ John Ambrose of Giard was arrested on charges of drunken driving after an investigation of an accident. He plead guilty before Judge W. L. Eichendorf and was fined $300 and sentenced to three months in jail. The sentence was suspended and Ambrose was paroled to the Sheriff on good behavior. ~Clayton County Register, 15 June 1944 ~~~~ Melvin Wagner, 19, of Mederville, was found guilty of reckless driving by a jury in justice court and was fined $50 and costs by Justice of the Peace George Ehrhardt. Wagner was accused of driving through Mederville at a high rate of speed by Fred Kahr of Mederville. ~Clayton County Register, 22 June 1944 ~~~~ Paul Tetrow, arrested July 4th at McGregor for drunken driving, appeared before Judge W. L. Eichendorf July 6, plead guilty and was fined $150 and costs. His driver's license was suspended for 60 days. ~Clayton County Register, 13 July 1944 ~~~~ John Lane of McGregor was brought before Justice George Ebrhardt on charges of drunkenness and was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. ~Clayton County Register, 3 Aug. 1944 ~~~~ Bill Seeland was arrested at St. Olaf Saturday, and brought before Justice Ray Barton, charged with assault and battery. Seeland was fined $25 and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 17 Aug. 1944 ~~~~ Irvin Lindquist of Clayton appeared before Justice George Ehrhardt, pleaded guilty to intoxication and was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. James Cline, 17, of West Union, appeared before Judge T. H. Goheen in District Court Monday, charged with larceny. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years at Anamosa and paroled to the state board of parole. Cline was arrested in West Union last week Tuesday as a result of an investigation of the theft of $50 from the Harry Conrad store here. ~Clayton County Register, 31 Aug. 1944 ~~~~ George Harbaugh was arrested in Guttenberg Sunday on charges of assault and battery. He was brought to Elkader and before Justice George Ehrhardt pleaded not guilty. After a hearing he was fined $50 and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 21 Sept. 1944 ~~~~ Three men were picked up by local officers at Mederville last Wednesday night charged with affray. LaVern Thein of Arlington was fined $50 and costs by Justice George Ehrhardt Thursday morning and Lyle Haught and Reginald Opperman both of Strawberry Point appeared before Justice Ray Barton and were each fined $10 and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 28 Sept. 1944 ~~~~ As a result of an auto accident on the Guttenberg hill last Saturday night, Lavern Duwe of Guttenberg was charged with reckless driving and fined $25 by Justice George Ehrhardt, who also recommended suspension of Duwe's driver's license. Lavern Duwe and Bernell Kahle of Guttenberg pleaded guilty to cutting two trees at the Lakeside pavilion and one at the Riverfront park at Guttenberg. They were charged with injury to ornamental trees and Judge T. H. Goheen sentenced each to one year in the county jail and paroled to the Sheriff during good behavior. ~Clayton County Register, 12 Oct. 1944 ~~~~ Mrs. Doris Spencer of McGregor, proprietor of the Student Prince tavern, appeared before Judge T. H. Goheen Thursday and entered a plea of guilty to a charge of illegal possession of intoxicating liquor. The court fined her $300. ~Clayton County Register, 26 Oct. 1944 ~~~~ G. M. Kirsch of Waterloo was fined $712. 52 and costs when he appeared before Judge T. H. Goheen and pleaded guilty to a charge of illegal transportation of intoxicating liquor. ~Clayton County Register, 26 Oct. 1944 ~~~~ Irwin Hazlett of Monona was arrested at Monona early last Wednesday and charged with drunkenness. He plead guilty before Justice George Ehrhardt and was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. ~Clayton County Register, 9 Nov. 1944 ~~~~ Robert Schiff of Monona was arrested and taken before Mayor Jasman of Monona on a charge of disturbing the peace.
