Guttenberg pled guilty to a charge of obtaining money
under false pretense in the court of Justice Ray Barton
here Monday. Hartman was sentenced to 30 days in the
county jail but paroled to Sheriff E. W. Carlsen during
good behavior. ~Clayton County Register, 11 Mar. 1942. ~~~~ Anthony Luther of Guttenberg, was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail following a plea of guilty to the charge of assault in the court of Justice George Ehrhardt, here Tuesday afternoon. The case had been brought from Guttenberg to Elkader. ~Clayton County Register, 18 Mar. 1942. ~~~~ A detail of military police came here from Fort Des Moines last Saturday to get Eldo Bahls, 26, of Mallory township, who was charged with desertion from the U.S. Army. Bahls was arrested Friday evening by Deputy Sheriff Arnold Mueller at the request of Army authorities. According to Sheriff E. W. Carlsen, who said this was the first desertion case in this county in the present war, Bahls had left Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, October 26, 1941, after he had been in the Army about four months. At that time he was being transferred from Ft. Bragg to a camp in Florida. Saturday Bahls was taken to Ft. Des Moines by the Army military police. ~Clayton County Register, 01 Apr. 1942. ~~~~ A week ago Sheriff E. W. Carlsen and his deputy, Arnold Mueller, and two state agents raided a place in McGregor, operated by Margaret Schultz. Four quarts of liquor were taken in this raid. Mrs. Schultz asked for a continuance of her case and she is out on bail until her hearing next Monday, bail bond having been set at $500. [see also Oct. 1942] Last Saturday evening Sheriff Carlsen, Deputy Mueller, Bailiff Otto Elsinger and a state agent raided the tavern operated by Malcom Stoops in St. Olaf. 33 pints of liquor were found. Monday Stoops pled guilty and was fined $300. and costs and the liquor ordered confiscated by Judge W. L. Eichendorf of McGregor. ~Clayton County Register, 01 April 1942. ~~~~ Jim Fox was brought back from Tulsa, Ok, and before Judge W. L. Eichendorf of McGregor, entered pleas of guilty to two indictments, one for larceny by embezzlement of mortgaged property and false pretenses. Fox was sentenced to five years in the state penitentiary for the first charge and seven for the second. Fox had operated garages in Marquette and Guttenberg while in this county but had come here from Forest City. ~Clayton County Register, 06 May 1942. ~~~~ Wayne White, Guttenberg, pled guilty to a charge of driving while intoxicated and was fined $300. and costs by Judge W. L. Eichendorf in district court. Louis Staubs of Peosta was seen speeding through a stop sign by a highway patrolman. When his case came before Justice Ray Barton, Staubs was fined $1. and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 13 May 1942. ~~~~ Fred Sautter, 20, of Giard, was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail after he had confessed of the theft of an auto tire. Justice George Ehrhardt passed the sentence. ~Clayton County Register, 27 May 1942. ~~~~ Durl Weaver, of near Guttenberg, pled guilty to a charge of assault and battery in the court of Justice Geo. Ehrhardt here Saturday, He was sentenced to 30 days in jail, but the sentence was suspended on payment of costs and Weaver was paroled to Sheriff Carlsen for one year. ~Clayton County Register, 01 July 1942. _____________________ Justice was swift and sure last weekend in the case of James Lafond, 18, and Howard Eckley, 20, both of Fort Dodge, charged with the burglary of two places at Volga early Wednesday. All the loot from the burglaries was found in their car at the time of their arrest at Fort Dodge and the young men confessed their guilt. They were returned to Elkader, appeared before Justice Ray Barton, waived preliminary hearing, and on Monday appeared before Judge M. M. Cooney, plead guilty to the charge of larceny, and were given indeterminate sentences, not to exceed five years, at the men's reformatory at Anamosa. ~Clayton County Register, 08 July 1942. ~~~~ Clarence Palson, George Hakert, Romanus Zapf, and Walter Schlee were arrested at Mederville Sunday morning after becoming involved in an affray. They were brought before Justice George Ehrhardt in Elkader immediately, pleaded guilty and were assessed fines and costs totaling $50. ~Clayton County Register, 15 July 1942. ~~~~ Ed Coon of Marquette plead guilty to operating a gambling house and was fined $50. and costs by Judge W. L. Eichendorf last Wednesday. One slot machine was confiscated and the money taken from it placed in the school fund. Lester Johnson of Arlington was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail by Justice Ray Barton last Wednesday. He was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Two St. Olaf men, H. Oscar Ronquist and Art Johnson, were arrested Monday night on charges of drunkenness and disorderly conduct. Ronquist was brought before Justice George Ehrhardt and paid fine and costs Tuesday morning. Johnson was sentenced to pay fine and costs by Justice Ray Barton. Ernest C. Klingler of Platteville, Wis., was arrested Tuesday for speeding and failure to stop at a stop sign at Clayton Center by Patrolman Karl Meinhardt. He was fined $5. by Justice of the Peace George Ehrhardt. ~Clayton County Register, 29 July 1942. ~~~~ George Nading of Mederville was sentenced to 15 days in the county jail by Justice George Ehrhardt. He was charged with being drunk and disorderly conduct. ~Clayton County Register, 05 Aug. 1942. ~~~~ Nick Rogers was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Taken before Judge W. L. Eichendorf in district court Rogers plead guilty and was fined $300. and sentenced to three months in jail. Rogers had wrecked his car on highway 13 a short distance east of Elkader, slightly injuring himself and somewhat damaging his car. ~Clayton County Register, 12 Aug. 1942. ~~~~ Elmer Landt of Luana was arrested on charges of passing a bad check. He was brought before Justice Ray Barton who sentenced him to 30 days in the county jail. The sentence was suspended on condition that he make the check good and pay costs. ~Clayton County Register, 19 Aug. 1942. ~~~~ Sam Pryslupski of Marquette was sentenced by Judge W. L. Eichendorf to one year which was suspended on good behavior and paroled to the Sheriff after turning in his gun. He was charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm. The shooting took place Sept. 13 during a quarrel in which Pryslupski's brother Mike received a bullet wound in the shoulder. Charles Carroll of McGregor was sentenced to three months in jail and fined $300. for drunken driving by Judge W. L. Eichendorf Monday. Virgil and Julius Ortman of Elkport were sentenced to five years' imprisonment and fined $500. by Federal Judge Patrick Stone at Superior, Wis., last week. The brothers who claimed to be ministers of Jehovah's Witnesses, failed to report to a conscientious objector's camp in June. They were then arrested and held for trial. Miss Esther Anderson, clerk of the local draft board was called to Superior last week to appear as a witness at the trial. Ferman Brown of near Elkader was fined $5. and costs for operating a motor vehicle without a license. ~Clayton County Register, 23 Sept. 1942. ~~~~ Walder Johnson of Wadena was arrested in Froelich Monday for being intoxicated. Johnson appeared before Justice of the Peace George Ehrhardt, Tuesday, and plead guilty. Johnson was sentenced to serve 1? days in the county jail. Clarence Johnson of St. Olaf was arrested there Saturday, charged with disorderly conduct. He was brought before Justice of the Peace Ray Barton and received a sentence of 30 days in the county jail. ~Clayton County Register, 07 Oct. 1942. ~~~~ Barney Embretson of St. Olaf was arrested for drunken driving and brought before Judge Eichendorf last Friday. Embretson pled guilty and was sentenced to three months in jail and fined $300. ~Clayton County Register, 14 Oct. 1942. ~~~~ Vern Shaw of Elkader pleaded guilty to charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in district court Monday morning. He was fined $300. and costs by Judge M. M. Cooney. Blair Bromstad of St. Louis, Mo., brought before Justice Ray Barton here Saturday on charges of exceeding the 35-mile-an-hour speed limit, was fined $5. and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 21 Oct. 1942. ~~~~ Margaret Schultz of McGregor was fined $100. and costs in district court here last Thursday after pleading guilty to illegal sale of liquor. [see also April, 1942 above] Viola Midkiff of Guttenberg was sentenced to the women's reformatory at Rockwell City by Judge W. L. Eichendorf Monday morning. She was charged with prostitution. Edward Wartham of West Union pleaded guilty in district court here Monday on charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and was sentenced by Judge W. L. Eichendorf to three months in jail and fined $300. and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 28 Oct. 1942. ~~~~ Frank Kelly of Cassville, Wis., was sentenced to 60 days in the county jail by Justice George Ehrhardt. He was charged with illegal trapping on five counts. He was picked up on the Mississippi island across from Guttenberg. ~Clayton County Register, 11 Nov. 1942. ~~~~ Bernard Karrer, brought before Justice Ray Barton Saturday on charges of being drunk and disorderly on the streets of Elkader, was sentenced to 10 days in the county jail. He was arrested Friday night. Elmer Landt of Luana pleaded guilty before Judge T. H. Goheen to charges of driving while intoxicated and was sentenced to three months in jail and fined $300. and costs. ~Clayton County Register, 19 Nov. 1942. ~~~~ Pvt. William Strong of Dubuque, a Army deserter, was taken to Fort Des Moines and turned over to Army officials Tuesday by Sheriff E. W. Carlson. He was picked up at Guttenberg Monday by a Deputy Sheriff. He had deserted from Camp Pickett, VA, in June and had been living at Guttenberg. ~Clayton County Register, 26 Nov. 1942. ~~~~ Frank Steck of Clayton pleaded guilty to charges of selling walnut and basswood logs under false pretenses. He was sentenced to a year in jail. ~Clayton County Register, 10 Dec. 1942. ~~~~ William Seeland of St. Olaf was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail last Thursday by Justice Ray Barton. He was picked up by local police and charged with drunkenness. ~Clayton County Register, 24 Dec. 1942. ~~~~ Otto Doeppke of Clayton Center was arrested last Friday by Sheriff E. W. Carlson.
