Jan. 1894. District Court column. State vs. Fred Ready, Burglary, jury returned a verdict of guilty. (see Jan 18, below) James Farrell and Chas. Dorweiger, Plead guilty to the crime of Burglary of clover seed from the premises of Jerry Feeney, of Highland. (see Jan 18, below) -- Elkader Register, Thur., 18 Jan. 1894 State vs. Fred Ready. Trial by jury, verdict guilty as per indictment. Motion for new trial overruled. Sentenced to two years and nine months at hard labor at Anamosa penitentiary. State vs John Farrell, Plea of guilty to indictment. Judgement that defendant pay a fine of $100. and costs and be sent to jail for six months. State vs Chas. Dorweiger. Plea of guilty to indictment. Judgement same as for Farrell. -- Elkader Register, Thur., 12 Apr. 1894. Mike Gilligan was up before Judge Kriebs Tuesday on a charge of drunkeness and disorderly conduct. Mike says he would willingly scrap the justice, so owing too Mike's good nature and geniality the judge fined him ten dollars and costs, which were paid. The case against Sam Boots resulted in a verdict of guilty, and he was sentenced to four years hard labor at Anamosa. Thos. Springer was found guilty and sent down for one year and three months. Jas Hart and Jas. Kelly, indicted for the robbery of Jos. Geisselman, plead guilty and were sentenced to three years each at Anamosa. -- Elkader Register, Thur., 26 Apr. 1894. Elkport column. Saturday night Charley Brown took a rock and cut a large gash in John O'Connor's head, requirng the aid of Dr. Kriebs. It seems that Brown and O'Connor had some trouble in the early part of the evening that ended with Brown getting slapped, so at a later hour Brown called O'Connor out of the saloon wishing to speak to him, and just as he stepped out Brown struck him in the forehead. A warrant was issued by Judge Buck. After considerable sparring the judge fined him ten dollars and costs which was paid and Brown released. -- Elkader Register, Thur., 02 Aug. 1894. Elkport column. John Downey was up before Judge Buck Monday on a charge of assault and battery. Two dollars and costs was the verdict of the judge. -- Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Sept. 1894. Local column. Wm. Monikle, one of the tramps connected with the robbery on the freight train near Turkey River some months ago, plead guilty last week and was sentenced to three years at Anamosa. -- Elkader Register, Thur., 13 Sept. 1894. Local columns. Last week, Monday night, Cortis & Howard's store at Monona was entered by three men who gave their names as James Connors, Thos. Clark and Ed. Watson, who stole between $200 and $300 worth of goods. Being captured below McGregor they were brought before the grand jury and indicted, and pleading guilty to the charge were sentenced by Judge Hoyt to two years and six months each at hard labor at Anamosa. Monday, Deputy Benton took them to the pen. Not much time was lost in this case. -- Elkader Register, Thur., 01 Nov. 1894. Sheriff Cook took four prisoners to Anamosa, Monday, who were sent down by the district court last week. Wm. Cook, for horse-stealing, got two years. Donald Murdoc, five years. Tom Tucker and Ed. Miller, three years each. The last three were convicted for robbing two Germans in a box car, near Turkey River, last spring. |
