1867 Under date of July 19th, Mr. Phillip Schaller writes us as follows, from National: The Congregationalists of Farmersburg raised $1,700 within three days, by subscription, towards the erection of a Congregational church, at National, at a cost of about $4,000, to which T.D. White, Esq., offers to give one of the finest sites in the village, valued at from $150 to $200. ~Clayton County Journal, Garnavillo, July 24, 1867 |
1878 The new congregational church at National is under way. The building committee have purchased the lumber, and the masons are now putting in the foundation It will be a handsome, cozy church, when completed. ~Elkader Register, August 29, 1878 |
1879 The membes of the congregational church at National, have just completed a new church, which is pronounced as fine an ediface as there is in the county. The painting and graining was done by F. Dennert of this place. The society are to be congratulated on having so fine a building. 1905 Saturday afternoon Rev. Gerhard Bunge conducted the examination of the Confirmation class at National. 1928 We are going to dedicate a Pilcher pipe organ at the National Lutheran church next Sunday at an English service, the organ was purchased by the choir from the historic church at St. Sebald, south of Volga City and has been revoiced and slightly rebuilt. It contains four speaking stops. An offering will be taken up at these services for the choir treasury. ~Clayton County Register, August 23, 1928 |

McGregor - they were sturdy Americans from New England
and New York for the most part who, in the 1840's and
1850's, settled beside the Dubuque-St. Paul trail in
Clayton county, 10 miles southwest of McGregor. They
named their community "National" and not ony
did they give the countryside the finest school of the
day, but they built and kept two churches of wide
