Christian Heise, one of the
pioneers of Clayton County, was born in the kingdom of
Hanover, Germany, Sept. 13, 1812. His parents, Christian
and Sophia (Walbrunt) Heise, were of German birth, and
died in their native land. He emigrated to the United
States in 1832, locating in Pennsylvania, where he
engaged in farm labor eight years, and from there removed
to Belleville, Ill. He learned the boot and shoe maker's
trade at that place, remaining two years, then went to
Burlington, Iowa. He followed his trade there until the
fall of 1844, when he came to Clayton County. Since his
residence here he has engaged in the boot and shoe trade,
and is at present residing with his nephew, Mr. Redmond,
of Volga Township, to whom he has transferred his
property, having never been married. Mr. Heise has ever
made Clayton County's interests his own, and has done
much for her improvement. source: History of Clayton
