Charlotte 'Lottie' Schwartz,
born 09/09/1888 in Littleport. She was the daughter of
Joseph & Anna (Rau) Schwartz; granddaughter of Joseph
& Walburga Schwartz, and a niece of Alberta
(Schwartz) Farrell. Lottie's mother died when she was 5
years old and she lived with her father for 2 years
before going to live with her mother's sister in
Indianola, NE for the next 10 years. Her father died when
she was 9. At age 17 Lottie went to live with her
grandparents in Volga. Charlotte Schwartz and her cousin, Lillian Farrell, opened small millinery shop, making dresses and hats around 1905.
Not enjoying the millinery business, Lottie decided to become a nurse.
Because all the nursing classes were full at the Mercy Hospital, Lottie entered training at a hospital in Clinton, IA, where she graduated in 1911. She continued her work as an R.N. until her marriage to Henry Dresen in 1919.
Henry & Lottie removed to Montana, where they had 4 children. Henry died in 1927 of pneumonia. After his death she took various nursing & other jobs to support her family until WWII when she was retrained by the government to replace younger nurses who were needed overseas. She retired from nursing at age 70. Lottie died at age 100 in 1988. She is
buried in the Stanford cemetery, Judith Basin co. MT,
with her husband Henry.. |
