Joseph Schwartz was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1828, the son of Michael & Maria. He died in January 1917. Walburga Meyer was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1828. She died in June 1919. They are buried in the Sacred Heart cemetery at Littleport. Their children were Joseph, who died 01/28/1898 and Alberta 'Bertha', who died in 1958. Joseph and Walburga also raised a child by the name of Charlie Miller.

Alberta 'Bertha' Schwartz Farrell

Alberta Schwartz, daughter of Joseph & Walburga Schwartz, was born in Elkport, Clayton co. Iowa in 1861. She married Peter Farrell in Elkport in 1885. Peter died 12/20/1891. After her husband's death, Alberta went to live with her parents, who lived near Volga.   She died 10/17/1958 at the age of 96.

Charlotte 'Lottie' Schwartz, born 09/09/1888 in Littleport. She was the daughter of Joseph & Anna (Rau) Schwartz; granddaughter of Joseph & Walburga Schwartz, and a niece of Alberta (Schwartz) Farrell. Lottie's mother died when she was 5 years old and she lived with her father for 2 years before going to live with her mother's sister in Indianola, NE for the next 10 years. Her father died when she was 9. At age 17 Lottie went to live with her grandparents in Volga.

Charlotte Schwartz and her cousin, Lillian Farrell, opened small millinery shop, making dresses and hats around 1905.

Miss Lillie Farrell and Miss Schwartz wish to announce to the public that they are going to start a millinery and dressmaking shop in our berg as soon as the building can be put in shape. They intend having their stock up-to-date and invite the public to give them a call.

Not enjoying the millinery business, Lottie decided to become a nurse.

Mrs. Mary Barron and Miss Lottie Schwartz departed for Dubuque Wednesday, where Miss Schwartz will enter Mercy Hospital to study for a trained nurse.

Because all the nursing classes were full at the Mercy Hospital, Lottie entered training at a hospital in Clinton, IA, where she graduated in 1911. She continued her work as an R.N. until her marriage to Henry Dresen in 1919.

Lottie Schwartz, well-known to Volga people, having been employed as nurse in several homes here, and Henry L Dresen, of Windham, Mont. were married at the Catholic church in Littleport. They made their home in Windham. ~Volga City News, May 7, 1919

Henry & Lottie removed to Montana, where they had 4 children. Henry died in 1927 of pneumonia. After his death she took various nursing & other jobs to support her family until WWII when she was retrained by the government to replace younger nurses who were needed overseas. She retired from nursing at age 70.

Lottie died at age 100 in 1988. She is buried in the Stanford cemetery, Judith Basin co. MT, with her husband Henry..
