John is wearing his Civil War uniform. They were married March 23, 1865, four months after his honorable discharge from the Wisc. C-3 Voluntary Infantry. The marriage took place in Green co. Wis. by Lewis Rote JP. It is recorded in Vol 3, pg 52 of the Green co. Marriage records.
John was seriously injured in the Battle of Resaca during Sherman's March to the Sea. He lived with the complications of a leg wound until his death in 1922.

Ted Kohls and a barn-building crew Above is a photo of a Clayton County barn building crew headed by Ted Kohls. Ted and his 3rd son, Dallas, are shown in the top left of the photo. Edwin "Ted" Elmer Kohls was the son of John and Tamar Kohls. He was born August 14, 1870 in Clayton co. He lived most of his life in Clayton co. and built many of the barns around the county. He died December 3, 1929 in Chicago and is buried in the Pleasant Grove cemetery, McGregor. Alvena Anna Baltes was born February 13, 1874 in Iowa. She died 28 February 28, 1963 in McGregor and is buried in the Pleasant Grove cemetery. |
Ted and Alvena had seven children: Willis, Earl, Dallas, Sylvia (Brechler), Violet (Knapp), Clarice (Knapp), and Beatrice (Sawvell, Rathje).
