Said to be the first soda fountain installed in Clarke county was that of W.S. Gore & Bro. in 1869. It was one of the large Arctic fountains, largest and finest to be found. The soda couldn't be colder if drawn from the center of an iceberg in the white bear country of the polar region. Gore & Bro. was the great public resort during the summer season then for a cool, healthful and refreshing drink. It was countenanced by temperance lodges, and no orator ever warned the young to "Look not upon soda when it foams," or told them that it biteth like an Indian turnip, or stingeth like horse radish.
